My brother recently picked up an originally well optioned '68 Charger R/T that was in a barn (literally) for many years. It has a fender tag that matches the radiator support numbers so that seems correct. How does one correlate the fender tag to the VIN? Sorry for the dumb question but my usual interest is 66-67 cars.

Only the build sheet connects the body to the vin. Same as 66/67 I thought?

I don't think there was a S/E offered in 68. Maybe he is just saying/thinking that because it has a lot of options. Common.

Thank you that is good information. I was pretty tired when we talked about it so he may have just said R/T. The tag calls out gold/green and the car seems to have been that color combo at one time.

I'm glad it might not be an SE I always thought the R/T by itself was cooler lol.

A '68 Charger R/T (VIN starts with XS29) doesn't have the VIN tagged to the body; the fender tag, core support and trunk stampings are the VON (Vehicle Order Number) sometimes called the SO (Shipping Order) number. The only stampings that will match the dash VIN are the engine block and trans if stamped at all. (Subject for a different discussion)

Thank you sir! I'm going to have him look in the usual places for a build sheet and check the block and transmission case this week. Pics to follow!

The engine stamping and tranny stamping will be on the rear upper bellhousing area (near oil pressure switch/sending unit) and they should be next to eachother, IF they are stamped at all. Not at bottom of block and tranny case like '69 and up FYI.

Thank you, that is very helpful. I'm thinking it might be worth taking a ride north to get a look in person.
