These are really cool but seldom seen steering wheels.(see attachment of a factory add)

It would be interesting to know how many people on the board have or know of anyone that has one of these wheels. As you can see in the attachment, this version of the wheel had a set of horn levers that extended through the openings in the spokes. I've never seen one of these wheels with this setup. The only ones I've seen have a center cap that's used to blow the horn leaving the holes in the spokes open and all too inviting to place your fingers there! Thus came the nick name "Finger Cutter"!

From my experience, the edges on the openings in the spokes are extremely sharp and I even cut a finger just by handling the wheel to examine it before I got working on it. That won't happen again!!! First thing that happens from now on is that the spokes will get masked off... LOL

Does anyone have any Chrysler tech sheet on these wheels? Anything that says when they were introduced or when they were re-called?

Because the spokes are chromed, you can't even take the edge off the spokes with sandpaper or you'll damage the plating.

If you have one of these wheels, did it originally come on your car or did you purchase it and install it yourself? I restored one that ended up on a 67 Hemi GTX convertible here in Canada but it was an add on and not original to the car.

Any info or pictures of these wheels would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Doug Lepak

Mu buddy ChrisH has one on his 67 Dart GTS convertible, and my buddy Joe found one in a 69 GTS and currently has it for sale on this board. You MUST be careful when driving the car or your fingers WILL be sliced off, or at least cut and bruised, DAMHIK! His car came with the wheel, and I believe all of them had a silver horn cap. There is a close reproduction that is sold on eBay.

Same wheel as 66? I've had several.

Me too. Bought a nice one for my '66 Satellite.

This is what the recall wheel looks like in a 67 GTX. (in this pic it is wearing a Dodge center) The pic you have looks like the same wheel, except that the centers of the spokes are filled in with those padded things. Perhaps that is the Charger version?
It is my understanding that the reason for the recall is that in a crash, the drivers chest breaks the spokes, and they become like knives and can easliy puncture the lungs. I have also heard the finger thing, but have never had a problem with it. I have one on my 67 GTX. I have no proof, but I suspect it is original since the GTX is a 30,000 mile unmolested car. I picked up another one last year for an upcoming project.

Here is a pic from an old 67 GTX advertisement or brochure.

The two pics Joel just posted are correct and are 1967 only (not available in 1966). The 66 versions were similar but the spokes were solid, not hollow like the 67's

Some fell on the 16th but nothing stuck, just cold and foggy right now. There was more black ice on the roads last year (freezing fog stuff), so far very little of that either, it's been a mild start to winter for Spokane.

That's why I asked who still had them in their cars? .. I want to start a class action suit against Chrysler for not tracking down all these dangerous steering wheels! J/K

Seriously though, I don't want to have ANY amount of chest contact with ANY steering wheel especially with just a lap belt.

Shoulder belts have probably saved more lives than we can imagine. I wonder who was the first manufacturer to design and install them (without being told to by the Government)?

Wife and I are there Tuesday evening and Wednesday. She'll probably want to do the Mall thing on Wednesday.

why were they recalled? 67-68 C body wheels are pretty similar but have plastic surrounding the buttons.

My dad's 67 Charger has the recall wheel. I always figured there was something special about it because you certainly don't see very many. His is MINT since the car has been garaged most of its life.

"Ole Red" has a 67 Woodgrain for a Charger. They were recalled due to Ralph Nader's input to the National Highway Safety Council that they were a safety hazard from the horn depressors stabbing the driver from a front end crash. You can see the horn depressors in the original sales literature and the steering wheel in my Charger with the horn depressors taken out.
