Recently I brought my 68 Charger out of storage of 5 years. Its a 383, auto. Prior to start attempt I pulled the tank and cleaned out all fuel lines, rebuilt the carb, Holley 670 Street Avenger, pulled and cleaned plugs, put oil in the cylinders and let soak for a month prior to start. Engine rotates fine but will not start. Did a compression test and all cylinders are 150 to 155 except # 8 which came in at 205. Engine was at room temp for test. Car ran perfect when I put it in storage. This is a mostly stock 383 except for electronic ignition and Eddy heads. Cam is hyd flat tappet same specs as stock HP 383 the factory built. Your thoughts?

Have you pulled intermediate shaft and primed for initial oil pressure? I would consider that. Maybe take all plugs out again and spin engine over a few times. That #8 cyl might still have some excess oil in it giving you the high reading.

The starting issue is not going to have to do with the compression difference. I would get it running first and recheck. I agree with the post above, mostly because its highly unlikely any 383 without pop-up pistons is going to make 205 PSI. 150-155 is healthy though.

Check your spark, and that its getting gas. Is the fuel fresh? And did you change the filter?

What he said. Your no-start issue and #8 cylinder observation are unrelated. Get it running and then come back to the cylinder pressure thing. It might just go away.

among other things mentioned (oil change/fresh gas etc) I would turn the dampener with a 1&1/4" socket breaker bar till the the rotor is at the #8 dist cap terminal (magnet dead even with the tooth) then pull the dist/intergear & preoil then turn the crank 3/4 turn CW till the dampener slit is at TDC on the tab & preoil the other bank (I forget which goes to which but no big deal)

All it needs to start is fuel, compression and spark at the right time....which of these are you missing? The compression is fine as far starting goes.

Take care,
Rick

The car tries to start. Fuel and spark are there. It acts like bad gas but everything is fresh. Timing is correct. I'll try new plugs and go from there. I don't know how #8 would be so high. Maybe there is some excess oil in the cylinder. Thanks
