i prefer the blanket and it has to go all the way around the trans pan and all.my trans tunnel is too tight for a shield also.i dont mind though.

If the car is fast enough, you need a flexplate(ring gear) shield too ,ask Fred

There is just somthing about a blanket that make's me feel more secure, but it has to also cover the flywheel/converter area, let's hear some opinion's why you like your choice better.

Blankets hold heat,cause premature wear

Blankets get all cruddy /dirty easy

Blankets don't cover enough area

Blankets are hard to get the straps from dragging on the ground

Blankets burn up on headers easy

Thats just a few reasons, My sheild was a KIND of hard to get to fit though

Some seem to be able to get them on easy mine , no bueno

cannot argue with your reasoning,I wonder which would hold up better in a actual trans explosion.

For safety sake? I prefer a shield. For installation sake? I prefer a blanket. Both will do, if and when the time arise's.

From my work with demo in the military I would say
that IF you could keep the blanket in place but keep
it loose it would be better on the explosion... if
it can move it will absorb the force better... but
I prefer the sheild for ease and keeping clean, I
dont worry much about the heat in a drag car

think that depends on install , you start cutting and whacking on stuff to fit or you have a old blanket thats seen better days

The sheilds are SFI cert, thats a pretty tough organization to get things approved

I have never seen one blow up in my life and I've seen so many passes it makes me feel really old
can it happen, sure can

remember when my buddy blew his clutch on his 65 Dodge in high school ( idiot) and it only dented the floor a little bit ..closest I have came to driveline damage in real life

1)use the proper trans cooler.
2)both wil get cruddy/dirty
3)just need a full coverage blanket!
4)you can cut or tuck straps out of the way.
5)i use header wrap.salution is dependent on aplication of vehicle.
6)that is what you get for buying a shield.

Hmmm ..
well, do you use a down comforter in the summer time on your bed ? You have air in house I would guess right ?

shields do not get dirty, sopped with fluid, dirt
One quick rinse with brake cleaner its right back to like new condition, try that with a blanket

since when do they make a blanket that covers the bellhousing area ?

Sure cut the straps off , next time you try to install it , get it right back to the same spot so they fit .. good one

Sure , use header wrap, good idea, hold heat in headers and dirt, etc and then they are shot too

Mine did not fit the tunnel because I moved my motor back or it would have

Done with the topic , not going to argue

look at 99% of super gas or super comp cars

No one runs blankets that I've seen

That my two cents . moving on

The possibility of an explosion is why you also use a bolt in sprag, a low band apply valve body AND a BILLET front drum.
I prefer the blanket AFTER I installed all the aforementioned parts. Fits better, and easier to install/remove. A GOOD engine builder and a washing machine takes care of the oil issue.

GO BUCKS !!!!!!!
Im with ya BIGDAD

I have had both and like the shield much better. The blanket is a mess in no time and I hate dirt and oil and only covers half the tranny

The blanket slides around does not cover the bellhousing is the biggest thing. So like BIGDAD said its not leagal

With a small block the shield fits easily and is leagal right from the get go.

I dont know if you have seen one of the SFI leagal flex plate shields or not but its not going on a car with a stock firewall I know that much.

Get a shield they take care of the whole tranny and you will be leagal. It is bolted right to the bell housing its not going anywhere.

Oh and another thing........ Billet drum + bolt in sparg + low band apply valve body = NO tranny explosions.

Dono if you have a billet drum or not Bill
But I would get one...... thats what explodes

NOT if you are running a slow boat like mine. 9.99 requires the flywheel shield. I would love to go nines, but due to the onslaught of rules it aint gonna happen.
