I realize OE wheel covers is the road much less traveled, but my project 69 Road Runner came with the mag style covers. So it has me curious if anyone has a car or maybe snapped pics of a car that has them?

Thanks!

There are no mag style wheel covers for a 69 RoadRunner? The standard 14" full wheel covers had a ring of simulated blacked out holes around the outside with a black center cap that says Plymouth Division.

1969

Those are also 1968. Similar to the 1969 RoadRunner wheel covers (and also Barracuda performance cars) except the 1969 ones have black center and silver Plymouth Division lettering

Here is the 1969 hubcap...original off my first RoadRunner that I bought new in 1969. Personally, I think they look great on the car but you don't see too many RoadRunners (really none) show cars with them. I'm glad I saved them. I can use them on my 1969 340S Fastback. Way better than dog dishes and painted wheels.

I do like the 69 style you have. I still think my 69 may have came with the ones I linked above. Two of those came the trunk of car. My 69 has a build date of 9/10/1968. Would that be an early year 1969? My car also has bucket seat interior with no head rests, also early 69, right? I also have a resto book that says these wheel covers where available 1967-to-1969. So, I guess without an actual pic of how the car came, it would be hard to pin down 100%?

I have the 1969 Plymouth model line brochure and there is only one 14" wheel cover option. Back in the days from 69-72, I never saw a RoadRunner with mag style hubcaps. It was either the factory road wheels, the "Sport" hubcaps that came on my car or aftermarket "Mag" wheels. If they had dog dish hub covers, it was most likely a Hemi car or a taxi cab.

That's interesting ... it says the Deluxe 14" were not available on the RR but mine came with those. Unfortunately I no longer have the broadcast sheet to prove it.

From time to time I see decisions like this where people say things like, well, it wasn't in the literature and I've never seen it so it positively isn't so. And then another guy says, well, I bought my car in 69 off the showroom floor, and it was so.

It could be that someone threw my wheel covers in the truck and they didn't actually come with the car? Or maybe it was early enough in the 69 production run that they did come with it?

The other interesting thing about this car, is it has the square Dodge style fender mounted turn indicators. How many would say, Plymouth had the bullet style, ONLY!

Only 3 styles available...Sport wheel covers for RoadRunner, GTX and Sport Satellite (see photos below). A lot of incorrect parts get added to these cars over a 45 year period that current owners mistakenly believe we're original to the car for one reason or another. Of course, you can say the factory made mistakes but that's kind of a cop out for guys who want to justify incorrect parts on their car. If you are not going for OE gold and don't mind people trying to be helpful at car shows pointing out the wrong hubcaps, they are fine...and RoadRunners and GTX's had bullet style only. Does your car have the map light, ignition delay and trunk light? Maybe the square ones were added? Another thing to look for on the back of the front fenders behind the wheel would be to see if the holes for Satellite trim have been patched. In any case, these are parts that were marketed as some of the special features on a RoadRunner.

Well I've owned mine since '73 !!! Maybe the deluxe covers were added before I bought it but in all honesty, they have nothing over the other styles so I can't see why these would have been substituted by anyone other than the factory.

Who knows why they are on the car? Maybe some parts were different on Canadian cars but it seems like you aren't sure that you want to keep them on the car? They are definitely not a 69 wheel cover and there's no 69 part number for them.

My dad is original owner of a '66 Mustang. It has the full wheelcovers. Not simulated wire ones.

In 1968 he had all 4 wheelcovers stolen off the car. He replaced them with 68 Mustang full wheelcovers since he thought they looked better. Hubcaps were a common theft item back in the day.

JD, you commented on this car before:

F5 F5 M6F F8 910 214997

Build sheet gone.

You're right, there's a lot of unknowns with these old cars.

Since I only have two of the Mag style covers, I just might track down a good set of the 69 Sport Covers and call it good. I do like how those say "PLYMOUTH DIVISION" on them.

As far as the fender mounted turn signals go, this is what I know about them.

The driver side fender had been in a collision and that fender had been replaced. It is very clear it's not the original with inner splash shields missing, poor fender alignment, hasty body work, and B5 Blue paint under the signal and side reflector. This side has a bullet style turn signal.

The passenger side fender looks pristine, straight, aligned to the car, splash shields intact, undercoating intact. This is the side with the square "Dodge" style turn signal. And under the signal is F5 Limelight Metallic green. Either someone went through some work to make it look original or it's been there since day one? Don't know?

Perhaps a clue from my Paul A. Herd restoration guide.

Quote:
Plymouth, 1968: A vary popular option was the sport wheel option coded 583. This was Plymouth's equivalent of Dodge's mag-style cover. Listed as part number 2881773, it can be recognized by its use of a center dome and five slots cut into the outer edge.

Plymouth, 1969: The dealer-installed mag-style cover continued unchanged but was canceled shortly after the start of production due to lack of interest.
