Well after the "cracked mains/aluminum cap" debate.
I tore down a core I`ve had for a LONG time,turns out its a 4006630 THICK WEB block.
So supposedly this a "good" RB block. Caps were nice and tight no obvious cap walk.
So IF it checks out crack free this is a good thing.
So now build options:
3.75stroke 440 11.75cr. 6,700 max trap RPM.4.88 gear cheapest
4.25 stroke 7.1 rod 10.5cr 6,400 trap 4.56 gear
4.15 stroke 6.76 rod 10.5 cr------------
I have the BCR caps,,,, necessary?
I have also found 2 400 cores local for 200 bucks each.
That is an potion too,but would require more cash for intake,push rods ,dist etc...

Low deck and forget about it......ya it cost but what doesn`t in this game and how many 400 blocks do you see having these problems. I even know of 8-second turbo guy w/a 400 and stock caps.......

I agree with Dom, but an option is to build the 440 block you have, and back it up with a 4.10 or 4.30 gear or what ever gets the revs down to 6200 for the 440, or 5800 for the 4.25 stroke combo. Unless you go to big port heads, or a very long duration cam, you don't need to rev a 440 over 6200, and maybe less. Use the longest rod you can, and if you choose to go 4.25 stroke you can bring the rpm down more, to 5600 to 5800.

Yep goin on 13 years even into detonation at 17.1 and still no cracks or major cap walk.......

Myself I would build the 440 since you have the parts... when you get the cash then build the 400 block... just dont let the 440 detonate

The block in your pictures is not a 400, it is a 440 block with the last three numbers in the casting number "440", not "400". The supposidely(SP?) best 400 blocks are the cold weather)1971 castings from June of 1971 to September or October "230" castings with the really large casting numbers, the others after that are the 3614230 casting numbers used up to around 1973 or 1974. The casting numbers I have on 400 blcoks after that are either 400530-400-1 or -2 castings  All Mopar blocks should have a casting date on one side like 12-9-75 or 2-16-72  That will tell you the day, month and year that block was cast in  All 400 BLOCKS should have all the cylinders sonic tested before boring  I had a 230 casting(not sonic tested properly  ) split a cylinder wall on the dyno, it had really bad core shift on the drivers side and wasn't saveable  IHTHs

If the hype it true this the "best" production 440 as far as web thickness. You are correct, it does have the Slightly thicker web. Not nearly as good as the 400,s but better. In your shoes I would do that engine myself too. What the last one lasted 30 years you say? If this one lasts you another 30 years its going to outlast you.lol Build it with the 4.25 crank, and the other parts you have.
