I have a 2003 Dakota with a 4.7 auto, the battery needed replaced, now when I come to a stop and go to a different direction;drive to reverse, reverse to drive or into park it stalls. Anyone have this issue and did you find the reason. I had this issue once before, same reason, battery replacement but it corrected itself in a few days, this time it has been 2 weeks+ and still stalling. I have a superchips programmer, tried a different program,no change. No fault codes.

Try resetting the Idle strategy To do this; get the engine up to operating temp, disconnect the battery then hold the positive and negative cables together(cables not attached to the battery)for 1 min (do not use any device that prevents memory loss of the radio), Then reconnect the battery, start the engine and place in drive with your foot on the brake, let idle for one min in gear foot on the brake,

What has happened, and what you are doing by touching the disconnected positive cable to ground is clearing all the adaptive memory from the controller. This will most likely not fix your idle problem because the dead battery has already done that for you.
You need to clean your throttle body. Get a new gasket, take it off and clean all the carbon build up from it. Inside the idle motor passage and from around the throttle blades. Put it back on and you should be good to go.

What has happened, and what you are doing by touching the disconnected positive cable to ground is clearing all the adaptive memory from the controller. GJ you are partially correct but....when you install a NEW battery (replacing dead/missing or shorted battery) and do not reset the idle strategy properly, you most likely will have warm idle issues. The PCM has a small capacitor/battery to keep such memory alive for short durations, hence the reason you need to short the terminals to exhaust the PCM capacitor/battery.

If it held its memory it would still idle fine. When you first start it after installing a new battery and it stalls right away the pcm has already reset. That is a first fire up precaution to protect a new engine at the factory. Trust me on this, after 40 years of being a Chrysler tech I know what I'm talking about.
You are having the warm idle issues because the pcm already lost its adaptive memory. You could just drive it for a week or so and it would eventually relearn but it would continue to stall at idle until it does. If it was a brand new engine with a clean throttle body then the second start would flare like a normal cold start and then idle down fine. But because the throttle body has carbon build up around the blades the pcm has no idea how much extra air to add with the idle air controller until it learns.

It is interesting that it ran fine before replacing the battery then after a new battery it would be a problem. So I tried both ways described to reset it with no improvement,if anything it got worse. Now I put some cleaner in the tank, cleaned throttle body then reset using the first method, now I am back in business. Thanks all. That's what did it for you. Glad it's all better now.
