NO OFFENSE THUMPER,THAT TRACK SUCKS FOR FAST CARS,I WENT 5.60 THERE AND WOULD NEVER RACE THAT QUICK OR QUICKER AT THAT TRACK.TO MANY HIGH AND LOW SPOTS.I HIT 1 SPOT AND CAR WAS AIRBORN,MY BUDDY SAID HE SAW ALL 4 WHEELS COME OFF THE GROUND,I EVEN FELT IT HIT.MAYBE IF YOU ARE RUNNING A MUCH HEAVIER CAR,WITH THAT ET,MAY BE SAFE.FONTANA IS THE PLACE TO MEET.

I`m too slow to worry about that stuff but I agree there`s definately some bumps happening. Fontana`s always windy when I go so to me, fontana sucks.

I am pretty sure I will be there.

The Valiant actually had 2 different problems. I thrashed and blew the car apart, took the motor apart and fixed it and put it all back together and was driving it 6 days later.

It was losing oil pressure because the oil pump pick up was not tight enough and it tightened "into" the oil pump raising the basket 2" off the bottom of the pan. Don't ask me how it did that. Possibly on a hard launch the oil sloshing did that???

The second problem was found investigatin the first. It had a bad THRUST bearing. When I drained the oil filter, it looked like COPPER PAINT! But there was no big chunks or pieces of any size in the filter when I cut it apart. Then I checked the thrust before I even took anything apart. It was .013 , Oops, factory specs are .002-.007 with max allowable of .010
So, the thrust on the crank was not hurt or burnt or anything, but just a worn out bearing. I am 90% sure it was because my converter was tight on the transmission splines as I had to help it mate to the transmission with a rubber mallet. Me and the converter and trans Guys all believed this would be OK. I was told and believed that the converter would work back and forth and release its self or loosten and act normal and upon dissasymbly, it would just come apart like normal. But after about 300 street miles and going to Irwindale twice and racing and breaking the trans at Fontana, when I took it out, the converter would not come off the trans. I had to use two BIG screwdrivers to pry it off. So, I think after putting in the flexplate bolts and tightening them it was pulling backwards on the crank 100% of the time and that is not supposed to happen. The bearing was worn out on the FRONT side only. The thrust sould probably be nuetral 99% of the time.

Anyhow, the engine now has better oil pressure than before. Go figure........

count me in. car went 7.43 on a 100 shot last week but it was waaaaaay too rich. pulled the plugs after racing and they were on the brink of fouling. The car would break up in the big end. went from 82 84 jetting to 78 82 car runs much better and the plugs still show just a hair rich. time to put the 175 shot on it and get kicked out.

nitrous is like a really hot chick with an std you want to hit it but youre affraid of the outcome.

Couple years ago I watched nostalga funny cars run there, was definately interesting, think they hit 220ish. I think Fontana has the potential but the track never has enough compound, the way it is situated between the railroad tracks and the speedway the wind just funnels thru it, it needs to be cleaned between rounds, not like they don't have the time with the oil downs. If you look at Sloans sig picture the car is wheels up nice but you can see the track is filthy. But I do hope they stay open just a little fine tuning and the place is great.

Kinda funny. We run 215-220 MPH at Fontana, with no worries of any sort? How do so many of you 9,10,11 second cars have so much trouble there? My car with the B-1 motor, felt like it was on a rail when I went 8.72 & 8.66 @ 155+ MPH at Fontana. Have I been to better tracks? Of course, but, Fontana isn't all that bad. I will have no problem taking my car to Fontana, with the new Hemi.

Irwindale seems like a fun track, with a cool atmosphere, but, that's about where it stops for me. We took a mid 7 second(quarter mile time) car there, years ago, and it literally did a bunny hop in the left lane, going through the lights.

Hope you guys have a good time.

When your under powered and slow like me Chris, you need all of the help you can get. Usually when I go to fontana the wind is kickin and it`s NO fun especially when I`m chasing a number. Last time I went 6.54 @103 in the 1/8, went to Irwindale and went 6.26 @ 108.35.....need I say more? And I do have fun there myself since I`m not fast enuff to get into too much trouble.

Thankxx for the info. I`m looking at the sat. Feb 21st t&t since my tow would have trouble staying away from his wife for a couple-three days. How much do you think I would improve on my sig`s best....I know it`s a 1/4 mi track but what gains do you think I`d see from these dirt lots around here?

Ron, have they removed all of the bullhead, goatheads(stickers that hurt your feet) tire punctering weeds or is it still the same? I have been up and down that track more than once since 1973 Some good times and some not so good times How's the stink this time of year I hope the weather is good, I have been rained out twice or more since racing there the first time Last thing, did they get both sides of the track level

its all in the prep, I think when the street legal drags hit fontana they dont do s--t to the track.
but for the psca races they lay down some track prep.

irwindale is looking good for me.
