Guys,

As my 5.7 Hemi hits 100K miles, I was thinking of pulling it and rebuilding it for more torque for towing. It does ok, but the mountains really work it over. That got me to thinking if they make a crate Hemi designed for towing, one with more torque for a truck? Does anyone know?

Does anyone know the difference in 6.1's or 6.4's and the 5.7's mounting wise? Will they bolt into a truck?

My truck is a 04 1500 Quad Cab. 3.92 gears.

Just checking out the options. I think I'd rather buy a purpose built crate engine with warranty, than try to build the 5.7 myself to meet the same goal.

Thanks!

Head over to the LXForums and get ahold of some builders there, a 5.7 based 392 with a good cam and long tube headers would be a world of difference

I'm by far from an expert, probably the exact opposite, but a 392 stroker with a 220ish @ .050 cam, ported heads, and long tube headers would eclipse 450 HP pretty handily and have a mountain of torque everywhere. You could get your heads ported, they have the smallest ports of any of the HEMI's, which would help with velocity and low end torque. With abit of work they flow 300 cfm easily. You could upgrade to Eagle heads (which flow 300 cfm + stock) but you'd need adapters for your intake (Eagle ports are bigger, similar to 6.1 heads) or use the Eagle intake. There's always getting a 6.4 from a truck, but you'd have to deal with the VVT/MDS issue, crank triggers are different, and I imagine none of the sensors are compatible, a lot of unknown territory to cover, and exploring gets expensive fast. Moparts member hemidup (I think that's his handle) is a fan of using the 03-08 5.7 heads for trucks due to the higher velocity ports. Heck, if it's bolted together properly you'd be well above 450 HP.
There's a couple of builders on LXForums that have been known to be sketchy, do your research, hopefully some of the more knowledgeable Gen III guys see your post and comment

A 6.1 long block should pretty much bolt in. Probably the only option that might come with a warranty and you will want to get the computer tuned for it. Also need to open the intake manifold ports a little to match the heads.

If custom building use the eagle head to get quench, the quench will outweigh any loss of velocity.

392 CID can make gobs of TQ.

Checked with local Chrysler dealer, nothing from them. Sent an email to Arrington, hopefully, they'll answer back.

My truck doesn't have MDS, does anyone know if a 6.1 with MDS would be an easy retrofit?

6.1's don't have MDS. 6.1's have fairly thin cylinder walls, the early 5.7's are supposed to be pretty beefy

I'm in the same boat, I'd love to hear what you come up with, I would love to upgrade my 03 Ram 2500's Hemi with more lower RPM torque for towing.

Thanks

there are a couple ebay sellers that buy dealer warranty engines when the warranty date is up---a friend has bought 2 so far in the crate ready to run at about 1/2 the price of a builder---these sellers have every make-chevy ford dodge gas and diesel....

100,000 miles and you are wanting to rebuild? pity

250K here and mine still runs great. I just passed smog check 2 days ago. Power could be better though. I was thinking along this same route but I'm waiting for the engine to wear out first.

was it in a chrysler factory crate? the ones i speak of would be like a 2005 crate motor that is sold because its 10 yr warranty was up in 2015 so there is no use in it being on the shelf as a warranty replacement block...

What are the sellers handles on EBay that sell these out of date warranty engines?

No this was actually from a guy who buys left over stock from fleets that no longer have a use for any certain type of engine....great deals if you look hard enough you can find them smile
