I'd always thought that big block negative battery cables were installed on the engine before the engine was painted, and thus got overspray, but 340s were not and thus did not have any engine paint on them. However, on Frank Badelson's unrestored T/A the negative cable has overspray.

What is correct for a 340?

To further confuse the issue, here is the negative cable on the unrestored B3 T/A Tim Wellborn had that was sold at Mecum in January. Cable doesn't look original though?

I'll start by referring to the "Totally Anal 340 Details" thread.

As far as I'm concerned there is no clear conclusive answer in terms of a blanket statement (painted or not) only examples of survivors that offer clues as to which that particular engine had.

Example, all of the survivor example 1971 340s I've seen that were produced at the Windsor Ontario plant (painted orange) and none of them had paint on the neg cable. Later 1971 340 engines I've seen produced at Mound Road (painted blue) have had paint on them. Same goes for many of the 68-69 engines I've seen.

Also, I looked at the TA in the Mopar Action article, while I'm sure that is a very nice survivor, I'm also pretty certain a few items in those pics are replacements and it's undergone a lot of cleaning and possibly paint touch up. There's a chance that cable has been replaced and painted recently, if you look closely it looks a little too nice. If you ask Frank about it I'm sure he'll give up the details he's aware of.

Edit....Barry probably has more survivor TA pics than anyone. Can you post a few examples Barry?

I notice that the idle stop solenoid wire is orange colored in this picture. Most I've seen are blue. Almost looks like some touchup got done at a later date and got on the blue solenoid wire as well as the negative cable?

Looks like this engine has been repainted at some paont, orange oil dip stick handle & heater hose bracket. I went with no over spray on the negative battery cable on a aar i just finished.

.....Bypass hose paint looks fresh too, in fact if you look really hard the bypass hose and battery cable look to be a slightly different shade of orange s well.
