Tell some combos here for your street small blocks. I have a 340 and 360 block. Trying to decide whether to build a stroker engine or spend the money on a basic 340/360 combo with a healthy cam and decent compression. It'll be going into an a body. Thanks

Go with a .040 360 and a get 500 hp. Makes a 410 with the stroker crank.

Mine is not the fastest out there, but it is a nice street friendly combo that has been running for thousands of miles and never overheats.

340 .30 over, stock stroke with original forged crank. Stock rods, forged factory style replacement TRW pistons with 10.1 compression. Comp XE274 hydraulic cam, unported X heads, Edelbrock Air Gap intake, 650 Holley DP. 3.91 gears, PTC 3,500 converter, 28" tall drag radials. Car weighs 3,500 pounds with me in it.

Est. 400 HP at the flywheel based on quarter mile time of 12.91 @ 103.7. No nitrous, aluminum heads, or stroker needed. Still need to play with the timing too. Driven to and from the track, runs consistent within a couple thousandth so it makes a good bracket car to boot.

Not sure what mine makes, probably about 350-375hp, but its a VERY simple engine combo.

'77 360 with stock pistons
Magnum Heads with R/T Springs & Retainers
Summit K6901 camshaft (218/228 with .441/.441 lift (.470/.470 with the 1.6 rockers)
1 5/8" headers
Edelbrock Air Gap intake (Magnum type)
600 Holley.

This thing runs strong!!

467 horsepower and 510 foot pounds, 408 stroker eddie aluminum heads. Not even close to the highest, but makes me happy.

Last winter I pulled out a .30 over 9 to 1 340 with stock X heads, 292/509 cam and an RPM Air Gap intake with a holly 750 carb and TTI headers. I built a .40 over 418 ci stoker motor with h beam rods and diamond pistons (10.9 to 1 compresion). I also had a set of edelbrock heads ported and I pretty much used the rest of the parts I already had. The motor makes about 525 horse power. It is in a 70 Duster with a 4spd. and a 3.91 gear. The only thing I can tell you is the first time I got into it, after it had a few miles on it of course, I almost had to go home and change. It was worth every penny.

360 block, 408 stroker. forged Ross pistons (10.2:1), Eagle cast crank, H beam rods, .600 lift, scorpion rockers, Isky springs (can't remember rate), Scott Brown custom ground hydraulic cam (248/254@.50) Ported Eddy heads flow 284 cfm (gasket matched), stock M1 intake, Proform carb... flows like an 850. TTI headers. 480 horsepower, 500 ft. lbs. tq.

With a 3.91 rear and a 4 speed, it's all you need on street tires... I spin through 3rd gear. If I were building from scratch, I'd only change the carb and MAYBE up the compression to 10.5-10.7 or so. Buy a Demon. My money is far better spent on tires at this point though if I were looking for the best e.t. and since I don't race, I don't need slicks or drag radials, so basically I am where I need to be: HAPPY!

I guess I'll jump in here to.

+.040 360
KB flat tops
Magnum heads (worked on with 2.02 valves)
M1 dual plane
Comp Cams Magnum 280H total lift .512
Crane roller rockers
MSD 6AL and billit dizzy
650 Speed Demon
1 inch spacer
1 5/8" tubes to 3" outlet Dynomax headers
2800 stall tc
727 reverse manual valve body
4:10 8 3/4
SS springs
M/T sportsman pros

This engine combo dynoed 392HP/412 TQ with a Comp Cams 268H and before I installed the roller rockers. I don't know if the spacer and Speed Demon gained me anything or not but the seat of the pants dyno tells me they did. I estimate my Hp to be in the 425 range now.

Jack

Ok here is my combo:

+0.035 over 340
4" Eagle forged crank
reconditioned stock rods
custom forged Venolia pistons
9.5:1 compression
stock 340 'X' heads completely gone thru (no porting)
Mopar Performance 484 Purple Cam (241/241, .484/.484 lift 108 lsa)
new stock stamped rockers
Edelbrock RPM airgap mainfold (dual plane)
Holley 770 Street Avenger carb (it has been re-jetted)
FBO ignition system
TTI headers and TTI 3" exhaust system with Flowmaster 40 mufflers
3.91 gears
4-speed
70 Cuda

The car dyno'd at 375 peak RWHP when the clutch started to slip at 5000rpm (so there is still more HP in there) and 484 peak RWTQ. Figuring a 10% loss for the drive train this puts the HP at about 420 at the crank (when the clutch started to slip) and 537 TQ at the crank.

Future plans for the motor:

-Ported Eddy heads
-10.5:1 (or higher) compression
-Roller hydralic cam and rockers (the cam will have a little bit more duration and more lift then the current cam)
-850 Holley DP Carb

With these upgrades I hope to make around 500HP/500TQ at the crank. Looking at what other people have posted with their combos this should be possible.

70 Cuda 340 4 speed - now stroked to 416ci (SOLD)

Here's the one I plan to bracket race....Quick77R/T built the shortblock

360+.030 roller block
11:1
Eddie closed chamber Heads...bowl blend, Good VJ and open the pushrod pinch to .980 (per RyanJ's recommendation)
Hydraulic Roller 236/240@.050 ..554/.540 lift 112 centers, 107ICL
1.6I 1.5E rockers
Performer RPM...minor porting
830 annular Holley
1 3/4 headers
904 Lock-up w/Shift kit
3200 stall 10" converter
* 3/4" b body rear, 4.10 gear
28" x 10.5" slick

Should be similar to a few others here like Ademon's. A basic, reliable, powerful, nice combo.

Looking to go consistent 7.50's in the 1/8th in a 1992 Daihatsu Rocky that weighs ~2950 lbs w/me in it. 87" wheelbase so that's why I spread the lobe centers and oversized the carb to kill a off idle and little midrange (shiftpoint) torque to make it more tractible until I get a handle on how to make it go rounds. I may go to a single plane if it still has too much torque off the line or a Vac secondary if it goes a little too quick. I figure it should make ~425 (well probably a good bit more )by ~6000rpm pretty easily.

Geee....I thought there would be way faster cars replying to this thread than my street car.

Jim,that white dart is so darn close to mine, it's scarry. Looks like you have a bigger cam, better heads, better intake, and a bit more weight.

Mine runs:
11.2's consistently (bad weather)
Best is the last time out.... 11.07 at 120mph+

414 based 340 block, 11.2 compression, 93 octane pump gas at 34 degrees timing, with home ported E heads and my own custom ground 260 @.050 solid flat cam. Home built 727 with RMV and 4400 flash 9" PTC converter and 4.30 gears with 28" tall tires.

As always,....driven to and from the track, and raced as driven (less tools in the trunk).

New this winter is a Dana to replace the 8 3/4 (same gear ratio) and it's 38lbs heavier.

Oh yeah, and a stick is on the way to replace the slush box!

All depends on your definition of "street" I will TRY to put 1000-2000 miles on mine this year, I don't have an odometer so... hard to know exact milage. Plan on driving it to work at least once a week if not more....

I'll have Chassis dyno #'s this spring, should be over 1000 to tires. Somewhere in the 1200-1300 flywheel I presume.

I think I will take my little LA/Magnum hybrid and go home with my tail tucked neatly between my legs now.

Larry all I can say as an excuse for mine is it is just a pig. Fast68 did tell the cam is all wrong for a car with full exhaust and even was kind eonough to sell me one that should work better. At a very good price I might add. However, I decided against a cam change and I'm doing a body change instead. Lighter and no exhaust may work. Jim

I just think it's kinda cool that there are two 69 darts that are white with smallblocks that run within .01 of each other! Would make for a nice run!

We have a tech article of a 426 small block we built last year that ran on pump gas and made over 600HP on the dyno. You can check it out here
http://www.hughesengines.com/TechArticles/12feb2008smallblock426strokerdynotest.php
We are currently finishing up a 472 cubic inch small block. We hope to have it on the dyno in the next 3 weeks or so. Can't wait to see those numbers!

Unlike most FAST style cars, my car is street driven more than raced. It has 3.55 gears and with a gear change on sticky tires I have no doubt it would touch into the tens. Best 60 ft. on drag radials is 1.62.

The car weighs 3280 with me in it. When running on polyglass tires I throw close to 250 lbs in the rear. Its not the highest HP street SB but does get attention.

Its got my own custom flat tappet solid cam and of course, a thermoquad.

Small blocks are fun.

Its a stroker 340 with production iron heads, intake, and thermoquad that I ported and set up myself. Over 11:1 compression, solid FT cam. Nothing at all done to the exhaust manifolds, 2.5 inch full length pipes with dynomax utraflow mufflers.

If you need a cam or carb for an application like this, PM me.

This was 410" engine I built for my daily driver '85 Dodge Ram couple years ago. Was real nice working motor...

4" Cast SCAT crank
Eagle H beams
Diamond Dish pistons
Comp 231/237 @ .050" XE Hydraulic flat tappet
Ported Edelbrocks
RPM air gap

I drove it every day of over a year, ~7000 miles 87 octane. Sold it to board member in North East who put it in a 'Cuda & runs 11.80's

Never dynoed this one....

Alright I lied, THIS will be last one......my turbo junk. This is old pic with old turbo on it, I hav'nt taken any new pics since I got new Borg Warner on it on New Years day.

It does run on pump gas, but gotta keep boost & timing tamed down to do it. I have mix of 116 & pump in the car now to run 15 PSI with ~24 degrees timing.

I'll never do another NA motor again..... Boost is only way to fly for ridiculous power & yet a motor that is very docile..... this motor will fire right up on a 15 degree day & sit there & idle like a kitten at 850 RPM. My buddy who was there watching was amazed at the idle, so I cranked it down to 750 for him.... LOL But normally I run it at 850-900 idle. It has 11" of vacuum at 850, if I pull idle up to 950 it has ~13". I don't have power brakes, but that would be on verge of being able to operate power brakes, all that with 1200 HP on tap

Fuel mileage should not be too bad just cruising around, carb is a 900 Billet Aerosol & has 76 Jets with Power Valves. AF on the wideband looks good.... I'm definitely sold on the turbo stuff. Next one might be a procharger though just for something different.

In response to the 472 build up by hughes engines I run a 461 small block pump gas, naturally aspirated engine. It makes 741hp and 638ft in a 68 barracuda that is totally street legal. It has full interior and full exhaust. Best et 9.75 @ 139.88mph, and ran 10.00 in Vegas 2yrs ago at Mopars at the Strip.
