Well I finally got to put a few passes on my Edelbrock headed 408 have a few issues going on. I have some smoke out the drivers side engine bank and my oil pressure is way to low. Seems fine cold but after a run shes low. Was going to race today but I brought it home instead to do a leak-down and compression test on the engine and I'll cut the oi filter open. Lost a lot of daylight after someone oiled down the track. Still made three passes with the first one a 1/8 mile breakin pass.

6.18@110mph on my breakin pass (6400 shift point)
6.14@110mph---9.74@135mph. (6500 shift point)
6.14@110mph---9.73@135mph. (6700 shift point)
Getting there but not happy yet.

Best it ran last year was 9.91@131mph so we are heading in the right direction.

See if the oil pressure is good cold.. about 70psi..
I think there is some serious issues with the by-pass
spring... as soon as the temp start coming up the pressure
drops.. if you can.. hold on to your old springs
wave

Pretty good John! What does your car weigh and what do you use for oil? wave

Thanks guys. Ted I run Brad Penn 10-30 oil. its the same oil, block, and oil pan that I've used before with a new standard melling oil pump, and I went from a 550 lift solid cam to an app 650 lift roller. I will see what the oil pressure is today cold when I unload but its low at idle and 50-55 during a pass according to the race pak info. I tubed the oil galley when I originally did this block years ago and they are Comp Cams solid body roller lifters. Ohh and the car weights around 2850 with me in it.

I hope it isn't serious. You will figure it out! I also picked up a case of Brad Penn 10-30. When the grandson has time he is going to come help me on the car. They are trying to get the soybeans in before it rains. wave

Check the fly cut area on the pump. They can be paper thin there.

Never heard of this, thanks. If I pull the pan I may go ahead and do something I said I would NEVER do again and go ahead and put a high volume pump on it. On my original build in this block I had on sticking and going up to 130 pounds during a pass. Thank God I caught it in the Race Pak download.

I just unloaded the car from the trailer and cold oil pressure is 60-65 but under 20 at idle after a pass. This needs addressed now but first comes the leak down and compression test.

I think the farmers are probably afraid to plant around here. I slept in till 7:30 am and it was 38 degrees outside and my furnace was on.

John, what lifters? Any chance of an oil band coming unvovered at max lift?

No I tubed the oil galley in this block years ago even for my 550 lift solid cam I had in before and then still bought the solid body Comp roller lifter. I'm finishing up a set of heads for Matt but I should be digging into it by Sunday or Monday.

That's awesome, buddy! How was the 60' and what converter and gear is in it?

I was having some oil pressure related issues as well, not as extreme on the low side ( never got below ~37 on the gauge) but I've already found a couple ways to pick it up, in my case it's not a pump delivery issue but a combination of a line side flow restriction combined with too many leaks downstream. The combination of porting the AN fittings going In and out of my oil cooler and inserting a rocker shaft restrictor bushing between the 5/16 shaft stud and the 3/8" bore I the shaft I've picked up the pressure back up another 12-15 Psi without having to go to thicker oil.

I was worried it was the MRL lifters ( since they have pressure fed rollers) but after talking to Mike I figured out where else to look.

Glad your back out there buddy !!

Wise... when you talked to Mike on the lifter
what size hole did that turn out to be... I have
heard .027 on the EDM hole

Didn't talk about that specifically with Mike but that sounds (and from memory)!looks about right if not smaller). The fact that I'm pushrod oiling and its possible effect ( essentially none) on delivery pressure was the main topic. I just asked if the EDM could result in a noticeable drop in block gallery pressure. Level couldn't been an issue with a 9 1/2 qt system but I know I'm pushing too much ( much more than I need) oil up top. So restricting but not cutting off entirely the 2/4 feeds to the shafts seemed logical. My an fittings 90 degree fittings went from ~.370/.4375 to .475/>.550 ID
on the respective AN/NPT sides after porting, huge improvement in flow and there are 2 of them in series in and out of the Freightliner truck oil cooler.

The lightness combined with being able to get a nice long 7.65" 3/8 pushrods in it made the MRLs a slam dunk. The EDM feed works great on the 440" Small block and the offset intake cup really helped solve my W2 geometry issues on that motor.

Not gonna thread jack here, but glad to see you back Mr P !!

Wize I take it you don't have a gauge on the pressure side of your remote filter?

Justin, no but I thought I would put one in if I didn't sort the delivery issue out....that milo don pump before I put the remote filter and cooler on would push 75-80 PSI cold which I thought was pretty excessive. The pressure drop across the cooler was in the fittings. Great cooler (3/4" main rails and 3 - 1/2 crossover cooling tubes about 18" x 6" overall) but the AN fittings are an oddball 5/8 NPT by -8AN so I was forced to use them. Porting them made all the difference in the world
