Bill May owned and drove the car. It was crashed at a small dragstrip here in Indiana many years ago. Now it is being rebuilt into an Outlaw Pro Street or Outlaw 10.5 car, not sure which one.

Yes, the car was orange.

I used to love to watch the KOS cars run and Bill May's 71 Road Runner was one of my favorites. I'm pretty sure he went to a 71 Cuda after the Road Runner. I know the 71 Cuda was wrecked and sold, but I don't remember reading about the Road Runner getting wrecked. After the 71 Cuda, he built an orange Dodge Avenger. I didn't care for the Avenger as it just didn't look like it "fit in" with the rest of the "old" cars in the KOS class.

Anyway, today I did an exhaustive search on the web for ANYTHING about Bill May and his 71 Road Runner and came up with NOTHING.

IIRC he wrecked the 71 Roadrunner and then built the 71 Cuda. The Cuda was wrecked at a KOS race at VMP. Last I heard he was rebuilding the Roadrunner.

Actually he breifly raced Dan Dyes Curious Yellow Cuda, then bought an orange '71 Cuda roller and raced it for a while until the Avenger was finished.
The '71 Road Runner was wrecked during testing at Bean Blossom drag strip in Indiana, that's probably why some people didn't know it ever was wrecked.

I remember when Bill May would bring the car occasionally to Muncie to test, back in the late 80's I think. I'm sure the cuda came later. His dad had a very nice cuda, not a nitrous car, I was told it was an original 6 pack car. I haven't seen any of them for years around here anyway.

Man that road runner ran good. There was another car running KOS I haven't heard of in some time. It was a yellow 69 bee. I think the guy's name was Rob Sylvester possibly.

Restoring a car to look "only" as good as the factory made it is like getting a boob job for your wife and having the doctor make them two different sizes to seem more natural

Bad car...Fun class to watch. I also liked Kevin Chapman's 69 Bee,Sheila Bowman's black Cuda... Anyway I sold some parts to Bill a few years back seemed he was still racing the Avenger but was doin some serious resto's too. He had Bought Dante's 71 RR survivor, had a real nice 67 GTX and was building a 71 GTX Hemi clone?? and I believe a 71 R/T Charger too. Anyway here is a better pic(Cover shot) anyway...

I was there at Bean Blossom the day that car crashed. It crossed the lane 3 times, hit the guard rail. twice, tore the right fender and tire and wheel off the car on the second hit. I was always a big fan of KOS till i saw this accident. Heavy cars, lots of power, and at the time i believe they still had to be on leaf springs. This isn,t a bash just seems a quick way to tear up an expensive car.

Leaf springs were not a rule, as my GTX always had ladder bars. Bill's RR had ladder bars as well. The last time I talked to him, which was years ago, he was putting the car in Outlaw 10.5 trim, which is basically a firewall back car. He may be in the same shape as I am. Realizing that class has gotten so out of hand, that it is ridiculous and wishing he had never cut the car up. There are lots more places to run the cars, had they not been so radically modified.

The RR had a nitroused, INDY head combo. Don't recall how big. I think 8.80s was about as fast as the RR ever went, but don't hold me to that. Bill went to B-1s in later years and then the smallblocks, but I think the Avenger was the first car for either of those combos to be run in. I am sure Leon and Andy remember some of the particulars here as well.
