I need to get a new battery for my 1970 Charger. It's a choice between a 600 cold cranking amp Mopar Performance battery or a 800 cold cranking amp Optima Red Top battery. My motor is a 500 hp with 10:26-1 with MSD dist and MSD 6 AL. I was using a Optima but it only lasted 5 years. The MP battery is a lot cheaper than the Optima. Which one should I get?

If you want another option, the NAPA Legend has a 1020cca (at 32 degrees) battery for $130.

Or one of the 2.5 pound light weight batteries and is only $50 more than a retail optima. Tim

Thanks for your suggestions but I would like to stick with the MP or Optima.

Last Optima my kid had was like 8 years old Charge it up and it was good for 6 months then it sat went low and recharge and it was good again.I run the biggest battery I can fit.I like Advance or Interstate as we sold them at work and they were always good. The Optima is nice but pricey.Rocky

I tried Optima but they did not hold up on a car that sits for any length of time. The things were always dead and would not re-charge.
Go for an Interstate, Sears DiHard Gold, or the top of the line store brand from you local retailer.

The Duracell from Same Club has been good this winter in my Mustang too.

Ricky, just go down to Sears and by yourself a Diehard Gold and peel the top lable off. That is what I run in all of my rides with no issue's!

That's not so easy any more. I went to my local Sears store yesterday to buy a battery only to find out they had closed the automotive store here I always bought my batteries.

We happen to have a Sears automotive store right down the street from us that has been there for years.I have had nothing but good luck with the Diehard batteries and have always gone the distance. Plus by peeling the lables off the side, look fairly stock and blend well in the engine compartment. The factory batteries are still going strong in my 03 Dodge Ram PU and will replace with Diehards when they finally give up and not crank over its diesel engine.

Herb which Diehard are you using? I didn't have good luck with them in the past.

Diehard Gold. I have them in my gtx, dart, and my 2 hondas with no issues. Cant say much about their cheaper models, but the gold units have worked great. I have never used a trikle charger or disconnected a cable and even sitting for over 2 months at times always fire up! Buy the best they offer and you will be good to go.
