Started working on this 73 Challenger Monday, it belongs to my friend Terry aka Kickingwing. It was built for export and probebley sold through a military PX but never left the states. It started life as a triple black, 340/727 column shift,3:23 suregrip JH23. It has the rally hood, susp, disc, but not rally gauges. He bought it in 84 with a mangled right side and thats why he painted it white back in 89. It's been off the road since 92. It has 80K original miles on it. It's going to be a daily drivey type car for now. It needs freeze plugs. So we pulled the engine and we will be cleaning and detailing as we go. The engine bay has it's original black paint on it and we will probebly go back with black there. (You know, so it looks like a Chevy engine bay.)We also need to pull the right fenderwell forward about a 1/2" from the prior collision damage. Here are some pics.

We had to take my 383 from my RR off the engine stand, notice the hacked open oiler valve covers, yea,70 only, I found out what they were worth later.

I had one like that when I was 18 years old, and it was my first Challenger. Haven't been without one since Mine had a rallye dash and no vinyl top, but was black/black. I loved the buckets with no console!

Nice project. My brother and I also own a triple-black '73, but it is NOT optioned as a Rallye, which I guess was to keep insurance low. It does, however, have the Rallye gauges and a console.

So my dilemma is-- should I work on the '73 to practice my "skills" to get them back up to par, or should I dive right into my '71 RR and risk making some big mistakes?

Looks like a fun project. Just to let you know...there is a new section on Moparts for sharing you projects. I've got mine in that section. The pictures will stay around for a long time if you post your progress there. Good luck!

It looks like someone just moved your post like I said. THey should have left it in the same spot for a while so others will find the new section.

No Mopar should be "PRACTICED" on. Every Mopar no mater the year deserves the same attention to detail in my opinion.

Well i disagree. I practiced or learned sheetmetal and bodywork skills on my 71 bee project, never welded or touched a car prior to that. I did this so if i screw up its not the car i really want done right, my challenger. I say start in on your 73 dude. Live and learn if ya screw up. You can always go back over them. Atleast your going to do it yourself
