I was just about to fit my new 489 centre with a Detroit Truetrac and guess what? The Truetrac assembly is not fitted with a thrust block to accept OE adjustable type axle bearings
So, I figure now is a good a time as any to convert to 'Green' type axle bearings (like it or not). I know there has been a quite a lot of controversy published in the past and there reliability is questionable however, of the two different types what is the preffered style........The Mopar style with the bearing and retaining plate as one unit OR the moser/strange style with the spirolox/circlip and seperate retaining plate?

Thanks MACKA

PS I will have to figure out a way down the track to run with the OE style if reliability becomes an issue!

I have a question, isn't the truetrack a locker, and if so do you NEED the factory thrust block? I don't remeber if the lockers go all of the through like a surgrip does. I also know someone else will chime in...

What do you want from me, I am just a dumb tow truck driver in Iraq...

I havent heard of green bearing problems, but I had to switch mine out when going to rear disc brakes to the ones with the flat metal ring and separate plate.

The Trutrac still permits each axle to turn independantly if required. I have installed Detroit Lockers in the past which have had the thrust block in place from the factory? However, the differential operation does not affect the axle bearing adjustment/operation.

There are two different type of green bearings, but I cannot recall the difference. Dr Diff will know for certain, and has them at the best price I could find.

I used to care but....... things have changed

The latest 8 3/4" true-trac now includes a thrust block. You just slip it through the side gear splines.

The snap-ring style, MO-400 and ST-400 Green bearings are the good ones. Avoid the troublesome, first generation RP-400 bearing with the crimped on flange, still sold through Mopar Performance.

Yes, snap-ring style Green bearings are really no different than all the other sealed ball units driven on the street everyday.

I don't recommend swapping your original bearings just for the heck of it, however.
