On my 'new' '93 Dakota, its got a low speed vibration I'm trying to trace down. (Its not the tires for sure).

I went ahead and pulled the driveshaft assembly to check the u-joints and grease them.

According to info I pulled up on various websites, this assembly is NOT in phase because the yoke ears are not in the same plane.

Looks factory to me, what say you?

That's in phase. I am not sure what years were involved but there was a TSB to replace the two piece style with a one piece. This was to eliminate a low speed vibration or shudder on acceleration. It was for 2wd models only if I remember correctly.

Hmmmmm.....interesting. Wouldn't that make for one l-o-n-g driveshaft though?

Didn't find anything obviously wrong, so, I greased everything up and put it back in, and now the vibration is worse. Put everything back the way it was, didn't forget to tighten anything, the only difference is the fresh grease in the U-joints. At 35MPH, it now vibrates hard enough that the sun visors drop down a little.

Ran out of light tonite. Going to check things again tomorrow.

Like I said I don't remember what years but it was a 2wd that the two piece was converted to a one piece. I think the problem is a tight joint and its right in front of your nose. Also double check the transmission mount. I don't know how you can say the shaft is out of phase as your picture clearly shows its in phase.

In that aspect, yes it is in phase, BUT quite a few websites I visited took the reading off the yolks. Based on pics like the one I attached, the drive shafts are NOT in phase.

Your's is phased just like that one is. I don't get what you are looking at to be so confused?

Being "in phase" and "in plane" are two different things.

Funny. When you had the shaft out could you move the all the joints smoothly esp the front one?

Yes. That was part of the reason I did pull the whole assembly rather than grease it in place, I wanted to feel how smoothly the joints moved. All moved smoothly, none felt 'tight', none felt rough. They were all the same style aftermarket joint, so, I assume they were all changed at once, and not individually as they wore out.

Before I pulled the joint free from the rear, I marked it to be sure to put it back the same way too.

Center bearing spins smoothly. Rubber around bearing is tight, NOT dry rotted, cracked, etc.

I had my mechanic look at it and thinks the same. There's no excessive slop anywhere, no obvious damage to either shaft.

So, now I gotta pull the unit again and get it balanced.

if you can tell where the weight is missing from you can put a screw type hose clamp o the shaft with the screw head where the weight was,it will take some adjustment but it can be done, ive seen pictures of shafts with two clamps on them,or just take it to a drive-line shop for a perfect balance
