My 04 Ram has an intermittent problem starting. It started out of the blue in October. I took it to a garage to replace parking brake cables and got a call from the tech saying it will not crank. It eventually started. When I picked it up I had to hit the key several times. Then I didn't have a problem for 2 months. Now it wont start again. I suspected the clutch interlock switch. I bypassed it and still no crank. Is there a common problem with these? Ignition switch possibly?

Thanks. Lew

Does it click? My 2002 had bad starter solenoid contacts that were intermittent.

No click. Nothing at all. That's why I thought is may be the clutch interlock switch. Very random. Doesn't matter if it's hot or cold. It sat for 2 weeks in December because it would not start one morning. The next time I tried it, it fired right up no problem at all.

There is a relay in the under hood power distribution box. Try swapping with another. Does the truck have a security system?

next time it won't crank, use a test light and see if there is power at the starter.(small wire) while the key is in the crank position,( will need a second person),if YES =replace starter.sometimes a slight tap on the starter if a no crank will jar it enough to crank.weather, moisture and temperature cause electrical intermittent problems.

You don't need to replace the starter as most of the time a simple replacement of the solenoid contacts will make it good for another 100,000 miles.

Well it happened again. I crawled under truck & tapped the starter with a hammer. Starter was loose!

Torqued them down real good & she fired right up!. Thanks guys!
