1968 Valiant 273. Power steering.
One of the bolts that holds the steering box in place looks to have been cross threaded before I got the car. It has broken the welded "nut" away from the K-frame. I had to cut the head of the bolt off with the torch to get the box out.

Can this be fixed? See pics.
Thanks
Dave

Is the back side of the bracket blind? If not, I would just through-bolt it with Grade 8 hardware.

Yes , that is a blind hole.

I am thinking about cutting the steering box mount above that bolt hole so I can weld a new nut in, then weld the metal back on to put it back the way it was. Hoping it will be strong enough.

The way those mounts move around in use it seems like the easiest way would be to cut the factory welds and do the repair in a vise. Then when it goes back on, gusset the heck out of it. Check the handling section here for the particulars.

It may be ugly, but it sure is slow.

Blow the rest of the bolt off with a torch. Find the correct size hex nut. Drill the existing hole large enough to fit the hex nut. use a long bolt in the nut so you can hold it in place in the hole - tack it in place then weld it completely. Grind it flush. DONE.

not at all skilled in welding but this is what I would ask a welder to do

All good ideas.

I have no problem with welding.

Stanton. The problem with doing it that way, is I won't be able to get the rest of the bolt and old nut out of the blind hole. The original "nuts" are square and would require a large hole to get it out. The hole would be much larger than a new hex nut.

Possible to drill 1/4" or so holes around perimeter of square nut and then plug weld? That broken off bolt will still need to be gotten out though. Failing that, I would go in from other side as mentioned, repair through access hole, then close hole.

The bolt is cross threaded in the nut. SO, I have to get the nut out.

super easy fix... Care to elaborate?

That is what I would do...
Pick up another square nut at the hardware store. Don't get one that has a zinc coating applied as that will lead to more problems. Cut a section out of the top of the K frame big enough to work through. Before you weld the the piece you cut out back in mock up the steering box. Tighten everything down and weld the nut in place. Then weld the plate back in and grind. It would be undetectable if welded and ground correctly.

...FAFO...

Does it really matter if you leave the remnants of the old nut and bolt in the bracket? Won't do any harm !!

Helicoil is out of the question - nothing to put it in, the original nut is broken loose.

Square nuts are hard to find - with a fine thread ... impossible.

I would cut the blind side of that bracket
off with a cut off tool, then do the repair.
Then weld the cut out section back on.

Pull the k-member (it's a perfect time to get it clean - if you were close to me I'd put it in my hot tank for you). Cut the bracket open and replace the nut. It may seem extreme to pull the k-member, but the metal needs to be clean for the weld and the welding will be much easier up on a bench.

I want to avoid pulling the K-frame if possible so I don't have to get an alignment after the work is done.

I will get it all cleaned up today and make sure there are no cracked welds on the steering box mount. If there is, I will try to fix them on the car too.

In the end, if the K-frame has to come out, so be it.

Thanks for all the help. I will update on how things go.
