Is there an easy way to drive out the pin that holds the bronze gear to the intermediate shaft?

yes, it's pretty simple if you use a press. if your trying to drive it out by hand you might be there awhile.

I thought it would be simple, but my machinist couldn't press it out.Just wondered if it's common for them to be difficult.

i not long ago replaced my gear for a new one. that pin was not going to move without assistance. we were showing 15 tonnes on the press guage & it was not budging. ended up drilling a small pilot hole & then enlarged it to almost the small end of the pin size. back on the press & it came off at 1.5 tonnes. this might be your best option too as you don't want to damage the shaft if you mishandle it too much.

I've had one that came apart easy and another one that wouldn't budge

If it's stubbern, then grind one end of the pin almst flush with the gear, center punch it.drill in about 1/8" then drive or press it out with the appropiate size drift pin.

I've never heated any.Usually if you can keep the drift pin from jumping around and not mushrooming the pin it with come out.Thats why we grind and drill giving an even and held in place area to start to press or hammer it out.
