MAKES DISTINCT GEAR NOISE IN 1ST THRU 3RD GEARS, BUT NONE IN 4TH & 5TH. ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS?

NO HISTORY ON THIS JEEP. LOOKING TO BUY, BUT CONCERNED.

Normally they make noise in neutral. I am unaware of any ordinary noises in gear though.

This one sounds like it has no lube in it while in first thru third gears. Shift to 4 & 5, and you hear nothing.

I would guess a bad input shaft bearing. Kinda odd yours is silent in 5th though. Usually a bad input bearing is silent in direct (4th) only since power is not directed through the countershaft.

Does entire transmission have to come apart to replace the bearing?

The FSM recommends splitting the trans case to replace the input bearing. Although, it can be replaced by just removing the front bearing retainer and snap ring. You just have to get creative to pull it out of the case.

if you pull the tranny---- shop price should be below $700 if they put an entire kit in it---you might use it as a bargaining chip if you really like the unit.....
