Getting an 84 SWB /6 4 speed truck back on the road. Wanting to leave it a bit rough around the edges but make a good driver. Trying to keep the 80-90 theme. I am thinking about some aluminium modular wheels to keep the old school look. It has cop car wheels on it now.

I'd just install a set of beauty rings onto the cop wheels and dog dish you already have.

Second choice would not be modular wheels, as they are "too Ford" for my taste, but rather Cragar SS's.

Third would be simple chrome smoothies since I have always liked that look.

I'd leave the cop wheels but just run a Dig dish. Paint black or close to body color or White like they came from a cop car. Trim rings just look odd in cop wheels to me

This is about as vintage correct as you can be! Of course, this is an 88. Both Dodge and Ford used similar wagon wheels with rings and centers, and Ford will fit the Dodge. Junk yards should have a gazillion of these to choose from (mostly off of Fords).

These are 8-lug, but I know they made similar ones with 5 lugs. Not sure if the bolt circle would be the same....

Another option would be the chrome Road Wheels that were original on some trucks and a lot of early 70's C-bodies.

I think I would go with the plain steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps as well. I threw a set of late model Durango wheels on my 86 (got them for free)while I save up for some Torque Thrusts and I definitely like the steel wheels on my 91 better. Personally I am not a fan of the wagon wheels or modulars on these old Dodges.

Those look pretty good on there. Did you have to use a spacer?

I've been planning on 20" steelies on all 4 corners if I can find 4 of the 20" spares that come on the newer trucks.

I also really like this style of wheel but was worried about whether or not I'd need spacers.

I would go for the cop car wheels with the vented poverty caps for 2 reasons (1) your '84 truck has the 5 on 4.5" bolt circle and the later wheels would require later rotors in front and later replacement axle shafts and drums in back to go with the 5 on 5.5" pattern (2) painted wheels are so easy to maintain and subtle. I had a set on my '74 D100 (traded that to my oldest son and he lost it in a divorce)

I went the other way with my '86 Ramcharger (early rotors and custom axles) to get the CenterLine Warriors to fit.

If you want a period correct wheel, you could consider the factory aluminum turbine wheels.

1998 - 2002 Crown Vic steel wheels. They're 16 x 7, have a lot of holes around the outside, I got two brand new on the 'bay for about $56 each.

You need to open the centerbore up a very little or use a small spacer to get out over the step. Actually on my '64 front end the wheels bolted up without any modification. On the rear end I needed a 1/4" or so spacer.

You definitely don't see them on the road much.

R.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner Roe, been a busy week. I had to have the hubs machined a little ($20) and I did use spacers. These wheels have a weird offset that when you put them on the 1st Gens the wheels are too far into the wheel wells.

I will be lowering this truck a little by using the van lower control arms conversion and flipping the rear leaf spring mounts and I plan on putting some 16" Torque Thrusts on it. I have a buddy with the late model Ram 20" wheels that they use on the Hemis (his is a 360) and I think if you could get those to fit they would look pretty good on a 4x4. I think those are some of the best looking factory wheels ever produced.

I don't know if you know it but a lot of Ford wheels fit these too and I have seen some pretty good looking rigs with the Ford wheels that look like Centerlines.

Do you have a pic of the rims you're talking about? And how thick was your spacer and did you have to use longer studs?

BigMike@Guage's Truck ^. An adapter would be needed and a spacer or open the center hub hole to fit. The 20" steelies are 5x5.5" bolt pattern where 84 2wd is 4.5"

Or these with the same center cap as above.
I know this one is dirty but they do clean up nice.

Here is a couple pictures Roe, hopefully you can see what I am talking about but its hard to get things across in a 2 dimensional photo. The centers of the wheels had to be machined about 1/16th of an inch or so and you can see it in the first picture though the semi-roughness gets covered by the center cap.

I did put slightly longer studs on it because I had a couple broken studs and replaced them all anyway and I think I would go that route regardless, the origional studs were just a tad too short for my liking though you could get the lug nuts threaded on them.

I dont know if you can see it in the pictures but the spacers look to me to be about an inch but I just don't remember. One of my neighbors runs a tire shop out of his shop and he measured it all out for me and ordered them but that was about 5 years ago.

To me the wheels and tires look way to big and I don't like them not to mention the speedo needs to be recalibrated. I want to eventually go to 15" Torque Thrusts in a classic spoked pattern like the old Cragar SS.
