here's the lowdown. he had someone build his motor, but he was pretty unhappy with it. so he brings it to me to "fix it". the last 2 passes it made before it arrived was a 6.66 & 6.69 at about 106mph, i think. when i took the motor out of the car i noticed it had 4 header gaskets on one side and 1 on the other. this was a sign of things to come. virtually nothing about the engine seemed to be correct: no thrust button, intake gaskets didn't fit, ALL those header gaskets hadn't been trimmed, dist. was untouched, the rings looked like a child had cut them as they had evidence of the ends butting, and so on........
i basically reused his parts along with a new set of rings. i managed to get what was supposed to be a "14/1" motor,{ but was actually about 12.4}, up to nearly 14/1 at this point.
after all this he called me today to tell me it went a 6.20 at 116 something. that's footbraking with a glide and about 3240#. he was tickled.

It must be a Chevy shop the specializes in roundy round motors...i had the same experience...except I had 15.2-1 comp NOT the 13.5 as they calculated.

Good for you for salvaging the motor.

Todd

it was indeed a chevy shop, which probably explains the glide leaving on the footbrake.

Hate to admit this but the dragster will probably be sitting out the 2009 season due to a very expensive (read explosive) shortblock build by a non-Mopar shop...bottom line...my fault...I chose them because I didn't want to mess with shipping to a reputable Mopar shop...big time chebby guy...5 dyno pulls...2 1/2 1/8 mile passes...carnage was so bad we could only guess what went wrong...only able to save intake, rockers, pushrods and heads (after repair)...oh yeah...saved valve covers too...with economics so bad right now just can't seem to talk myself into pillaging savings...again...

the thing that scared my cust. was the fact that his motor was dropping oil press.down to 25psi. at idle. i discovered it had no oil restrictions going to the E-Z heads.

I saw a 509 BB Chevy blow it's guts out on the dyo on it's first pull at the race shop. Guy had just paid a ton to a supposed "Chevy Guru". AFter the smoke cleared it was plain to see the he had left the rod bolts loose. Customer hauled it back to him and the guy convinced him we were lying to him. Told the guy he was making too much horsepower for the rods.

Glad you were able to save your customer some pain.

yeah, eric that's pretty good mph. but, remember it has a glide and he's leaving on the footbrake. the 60ft. is around 1.35, 1.36. if he had a t-brake so he could leave at 4500 it would probably respond. i think he has the potential to run maybe 6.0's

i checked the wallace calculators. 3240# at 116mph equals 785hp. but, i doubt it's doing that much. maybe 750 or so

yeah, but that's a lot of weight to be leaving on the footbrake with a 2-speed. it c r a w l s off the line.
