I have a 2002 Dakota with 178,000 miles. It spends most of it's life on the cruise control at 65mph. Lately it has developed an intermittent surge while on the cruise. It will just rev a little, and then go back to a stable cruise. Problem does not occur when cruise is off.Cable and vacuum line look good. Any ideas?

Does the speedo change when it does that?

Have you tried holding that speed steadily without the cruise on to make sure that it is a cruise problem and not a trans shifting in and out of od or lock up?

If I just hold a steady speed with my right foot there is no problem. Only on the cruise. Speedo needle not jumping when it happens.

I wonder... When I run it on cruise at 70mph, there is no problem. Only at the lower speeds. Any ideas?

My wifes 15 passenger van does the same thing with a 5.9 and 44RE, surges a bit with the cruise on but absolutley will not do it when my foot is in charge. I graphed the TPS signal, RPM, MPH, lock up... on my scanner and no blips or anything showing up there have not had time to dig any deeper

Could the speed sensor be dirty?

Thats why I was graphing it on the scanner, seemed to have a nice clean reading with no blips or dips.

Where is it located? I mostly work on printing presses.
