Got the '85 running much better today. I swaped on a edelbrock and got rid of the quadrajet. It really is starting to perform like it should now. Hopefully i can finish the exhast tommorow and go for a spin.

Well, as much as i like a good rumbling exhaust, i think im getting past all that---especially now that the race car is gone---maybe im getting old?

Anyways, this thing has currently headers, a y-pipe, some terminator? muffler and a 3" single tailpipe. It sounds good, but is to loud for me and the mrs' to cruis in for hours.

Im just doing the rear half of the exhaust for now(muffler back). Im using a used magnaflow that may or may not be a piece of junk---ripped off on ebay , and im redoing a 3 " tail pipe from a new dodge ram that has a resonator type muffler before the outlet to hopefully tone it down some more. I have had good luck in the past getting the sound from a good muffler but toning it down with some type of resonator, so im hoping it works here too. And im hoping that magnaflow is ok too (very rusted inside).

working on the truck---id like to kill whoever built this exhaust system . I really thought about scraping the whole thing and starting from scratch, but i dont have the $$ right now, so i will forge ahead with my various bends and TIG welder till i come up with something. This WILL be all redone down the road--from the engine back---this is to just get it a little quieter.

oh yea, still no truck smiley

Well, i finaly finished the exhaust. It took me all day to do it---some of it was just welding time. Anyways, this is the second toy i have done not replacing the entire system---my opinion, Do the whole system---much easier to start from scratch.

So what i did, i kept the y-pipe that was already off the headers, i redid the 3" pipe to the muffler, i replaced the muffler with a very used magnaflow i had, and redid the 3" tailpipe and added a factory resonator muffler from a new ram truck (also where the tail pipe that i cut up and rewelded came from too).

It is MUCH quieter now, I think its a hair on the quiet side and she thinks its a hair to loud still, but once we start driving it we'll see. Eventually i will redo the entire system including headers and put a cat convertor back in it so i dont have trouble with inspections down the road (i have my inspectors license but cant use it as i no longer work at a facility the does inspections). And by the way, i am a heavy flowmster user, this is the first magnaflow i have had and i was really impressed with it after i started the truck up without the tailpipe on it, It has a very nice mellow tone to it---the resonator just dampened it to a more tolerable level for long cruises. So that and putting the edelbrock carb on was my weekend of getting this '85 running better.

sounds like a hell of a project, i built my headers from scratch, i ran across the pictures taken the day i did it , it was a all day project too, i was wondering what size carb you used, and how well it runs with it ?

I made a set of headers last year----What a pain. Had to make them for the turbocharger setup in my dart i had. I swore i would never make another set of headers unless it was my own car and i could not buy anything that didnt already fit.

I used a 750 edelbrock with an electric choke setup. I really wanted a holley as i love them things, but from a dependability stand point, The edelbrocks are the way to go for a cruising type deal IMHO. Plus it was basically free---well it was in trade for future labor down the road.....

I know one thing, that factory intake (egr) on this 360 leaves alot to be disired. I will keep my eyes peeled for a performer rpm or stealth intake.

I bought a really good quality set of flanges on ebag for a slant six engine. It seems as if nobody makes shorty headers for them, or if there are any available, I haven't found em.
Guess I will go to an ex employer's shop that has a tubing bender, and spend a weekend gettin er done!

I agree, mandrel bends are the way to go. Every exhaust i do is mandrel bends. I attached a pic of system i did for a 32 ford.

the only real drawback is most mandrel bends are only mild steel, easier to weld but rust quickly , you can get them aluminized but they are hard to weld as cleanly as the mild steel but you can paint them SEVERAL times with high temp paint and they stay pretty nice, a tubing bender is a compression bender it smashes the pipe decreasing the flow , that is if flow is important to you
