According to the experts, the sand casting core box, is on it's 5th revision.

Eric .. if you have the Mopar big engine book it'll
tell you the year(mine is out in the shop) but it wont
tell you anything other than that.. if it sonic checks
good then I would think its a good block

The last number 5 does mean its on its 5th casting, that doesn't mean its bad. For the year, its cast right into the block right below the casting numbers on the drivers side at the rear of the block below the heads on your engine block. Other years , its on the passenger side.

But with your numbers as posted it should be on the driver side. Reguardless, the year stamping numbers will be cast into the block. Look , both sides. Should be very visable, but maybe not super readable.

The dash number means diddly.
There is no correlation between dash numbers and casting quality.

The Mopar blocks are all over the map in terms of quality, they were all good enough to get a stock car to 100,000 miles and that's what they were built for.

The UT numbers are the really important ones for a particular block. Casting numbers are secondary.

That casting number isn't in the GG book that I have which seems odd. I haven't found many castings that aren't in the GG book.

I assume that it is a 400 block? A 38xxxxx part number would be from the late 70's which makes sense.

There will be a casting date on the other side of the block, a VIN on the oil pan rail and some ID information on the ID pad under the distributor. Between all the other numbers you should be able to nail down what the block is.

There were a ton of crate short blocks that were warranty replacements that did not have a casting year visible.Look for a rivit hole above the pan rail on either side where a tag was attached.
