Thought Id start posting the progress on my dad and my newest project..

This will be an incredible car when done! First off, Its an original V-code 1970 Roadrunner coupe. Original equipment is sparse but include hemi orange paint, black Belvedere 'taxi' interior, 440+6/ 4 speed/ super track pack (4.10 dana) dust trail stripe, 15x7 rally wheels and AM radio.

Little back story.. The car originally was bought new somewhere around Prince George, BC and pampered for the first few years. It was soon sold to the second owner and used it as a weekend drag warrior. Apparently within the first couple months, the second owner managed to grenade the original motor, destroyed the hemi 4 speed and wrecked the original dana! It was hacked apart, ran hard and put away wet. Somewhere along the line, it received mini tubs, frame connectors, in-board spring, 'elephant ears', and some shoddy body work here and there. Im not sure when it went into retirement, but it traded hands a time or 2 until I made the 4,400 mile round trip to acquired it in 2009. I then accumulated most of the parts to make the car complete as my intentions were to restore it, but priorities changed so I put it up for sale. With no luck, my dad came through and offered to buy it! Well, as soon as I finished up my 71 roadrunner project, dad rolled his car into the shop and started on it this last winter.

The car will be restored to a nice driver condition as my dad isn't quite the purist as I am and likes to drive the crap out of them He won't be straying from the build sheet at all, but he isn't too concerned about date codes and such which makes it easier to do. I hope you enjoy

some of these pics are from the previous owner, I never really got the chance to get much pictures before dad started tearing it down. the hood isn't suppose to have the black out, it was added in at one point..

mocking up 1/4 panel. overall fit wasn't terrible.. needed a little mending here and there, but nothing that couldn't be remedied.. original was full of bondo, brazing and rust.

that's pretty much where we are at for now. the 440 he's using is just about assembled- going with a basically stock rebuild, and the hemi 4 speed is also rebuilt, ready to go. The plan is to have the car in paint yet this summer and I believe he wants it wrapped up by spring, but you know how that goes.. but at his pace, I bet we wont be waiting too long. more posts to come!

Great stuff, I remember looking at this car about 20 or so years ago. Glad it's finally going to get done.

I remember when that car was for sale. I really like the way it is optioned. I really like the coupes with the el cheapo interiors.

I am glad to hear it is getting done and I will be following the progress.

How are the doorpanels? They are unique and hard to find in nice shape.

The car came with 3 of the original door panels (missing drivers front) they arn't in horrible shape, but the cardboard and gotten wet and the vinyl shrunk.. shouldn't be too bad to fix. I've been proding legendary to make a set and offered to send ours for templates, but they weren't in the least bit interested.. on the plus side, I located a set of decent ones! only down fall is that they are blue haha! going to pick them up at mopars in the park next week.

Very cool Kevin, glad to see it finally getting worked on. You know how badly I wanted it! Did JW ever make good on the fender tag?

the fenders are painted and ready to go also, but dont have them home yet. only have the body and doors to go! no news on the motor yet, its the machine shops 'side project' but i imagine its almost done. more updates to come.

haha I know you wanted the car! I wish we could have done a deal with the maxi, but things were really messed up back a few years ago but no he didn't after numerous attempts to get a hold of him and even going as far as messaging him through facebook I haven't had any luck.. I still have a picture of the original tag along with the build sheet in hand, but being a lynch rd car, the sheet is way more important anyway.

Having the original tag or a picture of it is one of the only circumstances that would justify a replacement tag IMO. I know not everyone will agree, but I'd get one done up if that were the case.

...don't give up on the original; maybe the guy will grow a conscience.

with you, 100% I'm kind of suprised that JW didn't send you the tag.

No doubt about the originality here

I have no idea why he wouldn't send it. It was with the car when the agreement to buy it was made and when I went to go make the trip out, he went to the drawer where he kept it and it wasn't there. told me he'd send it later when he found it but never did (even after offering a finders fee for it..) since then, he moved to california and got a different email and phone number. He wont respond to any of my messages. Like I said, Im just glad the build sheet is with the car and a picture of the tag exists.

We've been doing some more welding on the car, drivers 1/4 is all welded in. all that's left to do welding wise is to replace the drivers floor pan and patch in where the frame connectors came through the floor. Depends on when we have to make hay, its possible we might be done in a week or 2. At that, We'll get the car interior, trunk, engine bay, jams and bottom side cleaned up, primed and painted correctly.

That's sad. Hopefully it makes its way back to the car one day soon.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard that story and I'd guess that 90+% of the time, the tag never shows up. I've said to people; "well, when the tag shows up, call me....until then I'm not interested". You have a fighting shot of the tag showing up before the money changes hands...after that, not so much!

...luckily for you, you at least have the BS and a tag pic. I've made sure my tag doesn't "grow legs" and I've got pics and rubbings in a few locations just in case.

I had a convertible road runner that the prior owner told me the backyard body shop was the last people to have the tag. I called them two years after working on the car and offered them $100 if they would look. Within 30 minutes I got the call to come and get it. Drove up in a blizzard to go get it. Worth every penny. Not fun to pay twice for something you should have gotten anyway but it may be worth it. I had a smile on my face the whole way home. It was a 69 four speed, green runner with a tan interior, white accent stripe and hood blackout. Not to derail the post; if anyone knows of this car the original engine 383 engine is now for sale locally. I sold it to a guy in Texas named Sam.

Havnt been posting in a while but still been picking away at the car. Motor is almost done. Used a date coded block that came with the car. Nothing radical, but it has the stock rotating assembly, cant recall piston brand off hand but compression should be in the ball park of upper 9's. Cam is a mopar performance purple cam, and it going to run 452 heads with an original chrysler aluminum intake. Should be a tad better than stock anyway..

Rest of body is now in primer. Some blocking to do obviously but a big step anyway. Should hopefully be in paint by the end of september.

Also aquired a low mile 4.10 dana out of an a12 car. The dana in there was out of a 67 and had been butchered a bit. Thats all for now

That's a pretty neat car. It's cool to see it come together. Makes me want to tear mine apart and start working. But I must resist.
Nice work!

Car is going down to get the headliner put in next week along with the seat covers done up. Getting pretty exciting

Looking good Kevin! FYI- that harmonic balancer looks to be for a cast crank (you state that it is a date coded block with stock rotating assembly). Also, on the driver's side valve cover, be sure to remove the #7 spark plug wire tabs, they were a C-body only thing.

Thanks! will do on the tab. when dad had the motor put together, he had a balancer in his stash he took down to the machine shop and thats what it was balanced with. I've been going to get more pictures up, I've been busy with getting house stuff ready for winter- it's getting cold!

Again, to me, this is where the hard work paid off haha. Its sunny out today, ill see if i get time to roll the car out and get better shots of it.

a week from today, we're going to haul it down to get the headliner put in and have the seat covers done up. currently have the front suspension tore down and plan to have it done so we can load it up on a trailer. some wet sanding and buffing to go and the engine dyno is coming up. things might slow down a bit being we got beans to combine, but still aiming on the car being done to drive in the spring

it has a steel crank, 6 pack rods, a mopar purple cam, 456 heads (unported) and an a12 aluminum intake. I cant recall the pistons in it, but it is pretty close to 10-1 compression (we cc'd it) the machine shop had it balanced out. not exactly the build I would have done, but dad didn't really want to go too far from a stockish build.

Got the front rebuilt. I normally would have bolted the motor to it first and drop the car on but i needed to get it rolling to take down for headliner install. Probably just drop the motor in from top now and boot tranny on from underneath. The k frame had one heck of a nice dent right in the middle from what i assume was from a balancer dropping on it.

And last for now, just a pic of the car outside. Still some wet sanding and buffing to do though.

Dyno coming up soon and then probably freshen up the rear as well.

Also dynoed the motor. 426 hp and 491 tq. Not shabby for a stockish motor we played with the timing, jetting and different things and this was the best compromise. did see tq get up to 498 and hp did hit 435 at one point. also, the dyno guy wasn't the best at spelling...

Soo today we painted up the motor and started putting some stuff back on. Funny story, had some paint from Frank Battleson left over and ran short. I had some persion orange and IH red on hand so i mixed the 2 together and got it to match (from what i can tell) perfectly.

VERY nice. was it dynoed with headers or the manifolds?

I sure wish I had been able to dyno my Purestock 440-6 before it went in the car; it's similar but is 10.75:1, Mr. Sixpack cam, internally balanced with custom Ross NHRA legal pistons and a crane roller rocker setup and a few other tweeks. I would guess that mine is in the 430 - 450hp range

What are you planning for exhaust?

Anyhow, GREAT job on the car. Keep the pics coming.

thanks! it was done with dyno headers, so I imagine the manifolds will put it down to the 410 hp range give or take. Im not entirely sure what his plans are for exhaust. dad has used a local guy to bend him up exhaust in the past and he does do nice work. probably be going with dynomax mufflers, either super turbos or ultra flos. havn't thought that far ahead yet haha. car never came with tips either so none will be going on. just turn downs for this car.

The reason I mentioned exhaust is because it would be a shame to choke up such a strong runner. After discussions with some of the PSMCDR 6 pack front runners, I went with the tried and true 2.5" mandrel bent TTI with Dynomax ultraflows and couldn't be happier.

I'd bet that my exhaust, with HP manifolds, flows better than the stock 2.25" compression bent pipes with baffle type stock mufflers and headers. A good muffler shop can probably do a decent job on the 2.5" pipes, but I'd strongly recommend the Ultraflows.

Here's a video of mine;

That sounds pretty sweet! I had tti 2.5 and ultraflos on my 71 fast 340 runner amd was very happy too, but my dad will probably have a hard time splurging for them. Ill try and swade him either way.

Still been working on the runner, just seems like its been a lot of stuff not worth posting about. Pulled the dana out to give it a good cleaning and repaint. Took the cover off and everything looked like new yet. After all, it did come out of an a12 in the mid 70's with low miles!

The leaf springs were rebuilt as well. As mentioned earlier, this isnt going o be a 100 pt show winner, but a nice driver. Hence the reason we painted the springs..

Got the rear back under the car with new rubber on it. 255/60/15 in the back, 225/60/15 in the front. The trim rings are wheel vintiques (sp?) of course there is the gap in the middle but there doesnt seem to be a better alternative other than track down expensive originals.

Lastly, a close up on the headlight bucket to show contrast in colors. More updates to come, hopefully when the motor is in.

i've been thinking of doing mine up. what paints did you use, and can you outline the process you did to paint them?

Im sure what I did isn't 100% correct, but it looks good IMO. I used Krylon graphite Textured shimmer #2521 and Krylon Silver Textured shimmer #2522 for the paint. pop the trim off, lightly sanded the grill to get the old paint off as much as I could. Then I gave it a bacth in soapy water and let dry. Used adhesion promoter and them primed it. After primer dried, I sprayed the light argent and black first. I did it this way because I figured it would be easier to mask off than the gilled part. When that dried, masked off said areas, and sprayed the graphite. I went front the back side first to assure coverage without getting the paint too heavy and then moved to the front portion. Like I said, it probably isn't the most accurate, but It will look nice in front of the car.

Sorry havnt posted sooner but the motor and the rest of the driveline is pretty much done. Waiting on the dash cluster to get here and we can wrap up the interior. Still need to bolt on the front clip as well, but everything is moving along nicley.

Btw, the air cleaner lid never got repainted. Had sort of a neat original patina to it so we'll probably leave it

Ya things are moving pretty smoothley! If all goes well, should go from start to finish in little over a year.

I know some people on here are going to get their undies in a bundle, but we had a reproduction tag made since the original tag had gotten lost. Its pretty stinking close to the original and we were not trying to deceive anyone by adding codes.

Started putting the dash together as well. Cluster should be done this week and then we can wrape up the dash and subsiquently the rest of the interior. Still waiting on getting the bumpers back from chroming, but it should be finished up in a month

I've always wanted to make it my side job restoring cars for others, but I have to use my dads shop and he doesn't want to get involved. Im looking to buy a house here this next year and my own shop is defiantly on the agenda, so who knows.

Interior pretty much done. Waiting for the windshield and then the a pillar trim and headliner trim peice. Still need to touch up passenger fender and bolt that on. Also still waiting for the bumpers to come back.

Got the car running yesterday also! Sounds pretty sweet

haha I can't say I've seen too many other cars with this interior. My guess is the door panels are hard to find and the seat covers are ugly and too easy to upgrade to the 'decor package' ones. It was the obvious choice for us to go with the original rout though.

thanks for the compliments guys! hopeful the the car is done within the next 2-3 weeks. There arn't any electrical bugs thus far, so that's a big step in the right direction. I guess in all reality, it is drivable at this point Right at the 1 year mark to boot. Very satisfying having it come together this quickly being how much work was needed.

well fender should be touched up by friday, bumpers are going to be delivered tomorrow, and the guy should show up to put the windshield in before the end of the week too. If all goes well, it will be done by the end of the weekend.

Alright, so the car is pretty much done. Other than getting windshield blades and snapping the wipers on theres no other task to be done (unless a querk pops up) we pulled the car in the shop last late march and 12 and a half months later its in it former glory. Put about 10 miles on it today with no issue to boot. We plan on having it out at mopars in the park next month so stop and visit.

Wisconsin in dang near Canada anyway, eh? haha I remember crossing the boarder to get into Canada when I got this car and was asked by several people if I was originally from there due to my accent! That was 6 years ago I picked this car up already..

Ok, i lied. Heres another little tidbit for the car. The roadrunner had two stickers on the windshield from its days in prince george at the drag strip. They were still in tact so it was only right to get them back on the car. Thought some of you canooks would appreciate it. smile
