WHICH ONE IS BETTER AND WHY? MY MACHINRE SHOP USES ATI, BUT SAYS FLUIDAMPR IS GOOD. I HAVE A NEW FLUIDAMPR IN THE BOX. IS THERE ANY REASON I SHOULD NOT USE IT? I AM BUILDING A LOW DECK 512.

It just boils down to personal choice. Myself, I don't care for any brand of damper that has fluid, because I have personally seen that fluid harden and jell inside. Also, you can't check the balance of a fluid damper, you just have to take their word for it. Most builders, me included, prefer the ATI unit, although there are some diehard fluid damper supporters.

I've run both, never seen any problems with either. I've had a Fluidampr on my low deck street motors for years. I usually use an ATI on race motors but that is because ATI has a bunch of different options that Fluidampr doesn't have.

Fluid Dampers work on Diesels with a lower RPM. My machinist did an experiment and a fluidamper was very incosistant when he spun a crank up 3 different times with the same crank, and damper. Would never give him any of the same readings. The jejjy is never in the same place when its spun. it settles in a different place when it stops, and they always seem to have an air pocket in them for expantion.

ATI here as well. Keep the fluid damper. When I asked them how it dampens the motor correctly at different temps, the other end of the phone went silent.

you actually can test a fluid style damper on a balance machine, just not at the typical 500 rpm speed that cranks are usually balanced at.
spinning them up un the 700+ range they will go neutral if they're working right, below that they won't neutral out. once they neutral out you can decrease the rpm to around 600-650 and they'll stay neutral.
that machine shop test that Moparnut mentioned is typical at 500 rpm.

both ATI and Fluidampr brands are expensive. we have some less expensive elastomer (ati) style dampers for those on a limited budget that seem to perform quite well also.

Honestly when it comes down to same for same money, Ill take the company with a unquestioned reputation for quality.

i have 2 340's one has fluidamper the other ati.i haven't seen anything wrong (bearing wise )with either motor.both motors are run at 7600 rpm.that being said i would choose ati for two reasons.it is rebuildable and it is much lighter.

my fluiddampner has one season under its belt on my 512 , so far so good

i use a fluid dampr also but after seeing it work on the blown/2K HP TD lake erie monster i would not be afraid to use the ATI.

Both good stuff from our exp.Never had trouble with either.
