Guys,

I am thinking about going to a quieter muffler on my Charger as it drones anywhere over 2500 RPM or so. I would like to be able to hold a conversation in the car without screaming while I drive down the road.

What's on there now are Flowmaster 40 series which sound awesome but this gets old after 10 minutes. I realize this won't be a quiet ride (499 stroker) but I want something quieter while still sounding somewhat 'throaty'.

I have 3" exhaust from the headers to the tips. I have read that Dynomax has some good options but I see several types (VT, Turbo, UltraFlo, etc) and I am unsure of the difference. I need a muffler with a offset inlet and center outlet both at 3". I could go aluminized steel or stainless.

Any recommendations for a somewhat quiet muffler, still sounds decent, for a STREET car? I don't care about absolute performance here, more for a nicer ride quality.

Dynomax (not sure which ones but I hear the VT (the one with the flap) that the spring rattles) plus some glasspacks alongside the rear leaf springs

The Dynomax VT does have issues w/ the flaps rattling.
The Dynomax super turbos are much quieter, but hurt the power. Yes, it is noticeable.

The Dynomax Ultra-Flow is a good choice. MORE flow and quieter than the Flowmaster 40.
The Hooker Max Flow is basically the same thing as the Dynomax Ultra Flow.

The Hooker Aero Chamber is a little quieter than the Ultra Flow and Max flow, but louder than the turbos. Still make great power though.
These would be my choice if you want power, but reasonably quiet.

If you like Flowmaster here is a website where they compare a few models.

I am fine ditching Flowmasters. I want more of a pleasurable ride...not just catching everyone's attention.

I am looking at the VT's and I am not crazy about having a spring that can break or rattle inside a muffler. Maybe this isn't a real issue but I am curious to hear first hand experiences with these. I don't want to choke my engine but I have heard that the Flowmasters I have really don't flow much at all...

Would the Ultra Flows with some glasspacks (resonators) be significantly quieter than the 40's I have now? I am so tired of feeling like my head is going to detonate in this car when I'm going over 60 mph!

If you are considering adding a new muffler and a glass pack, how about adding a second muffler to your existing exhaust and see if that helps?

classic industries has magnaflow glasspacks: 18" shell/22" length/4" dia/3" inlet/outlet #18129 $51.99 ea with 15% off paying with visa "classic?". what YO7 said I'd add those before messing with the rest of the system. I've never run flowmasters but the flowbastards moniker the one guy put on em way back always stuck in my head, that they were way too noisy. yeah you gotta change something for your peace of mind

I put 2.5" Pypes Violators on my Bee and it sounds awesome. I don't know how they flow, but looking through them, I would have to say well.

I had the Flowmaster 40's on my Charger's 2 1/2" system when I bought it. I endured one summer with them and my wife endured one trip to the golf course in it. The drone was dead on what you describe. I replaced them with the long case Dynomax super turbos and the drone is gone, cruising is a nice mellow sound. Still sounds great 3 years later.

i use what is considered the 'stock' hemi mufflers on my 440 RR and it's pretty quiet. i think they are really a 'C' body muffler though.

I like my Hooker Aerochambers and I use them on an uninsulated van with a cammed up big block.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, guys! I am a bit ignorant in the science behind exhaust acoustics so please forgive me.

Can simply adding the glasspack type mufflers behind the Flowmasters really quiet it down that much? I saw the Magnaflows and Dynomax has their version of these as well.

I am alright with trying simply adding the glasspacks but I am wondering if I am not happy and then have to take it in again to swap the Flowmasters out, if I should just do everything at once? I hate to ditch these things as they sound so bad ace outside the car but the drone is just killing me.

Anybody here just added the glaspacks behind a noisy muffler and gotten really good results or should I just swap out the Flowmasters as well? Would the Dynomax Ultra Flow + glasspacks be too quiet or still beefy enough?

cheapest route would be to add 18" glasspacks or possibly 12" glasspacks (depending on how much room you have) after the 40 series flows & it should take the drone out that the flowmasters make. my

Just me I'd cut the tailpipes alongside the rear leafs & add the glasspacks which you could easily do with some hangers & you'd be up & running in no time with no labor charges & you'd quickly know if that is going to take care of things

I run Dynomax Ultraflows under the floor with a Magnaflow straight-thru muffler by the gas tank in my E-body, and I don't consider it too quiet, but of course that is a subjective matter. If you look for a recent post by Y07_A66 you will see some posts from me with acoustic sound levels comparing the Ultraflows by themselves versus two mufflers on both sides. The sound plots came from a smartphone app. Adding the second muffler on each side did make a substantial improvement.

Where are you in NC? I am in the Raleigh area.

This is how member DAVENC mounted his second muffler in the above reference.
If is a Magnaflow 7x14 piece. I will be using this idea when I change my exhaust system this Summer.

Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers, love them. Nice and throaty at idle and low RPM, but very nice under high RPM with no droan!
