PU idles idles rough off and on , I put a timing light on it and the timing mark is cycling around 12 degrees. no codes, its a 94 2500 with 200k on it

Timing is controlled by the computer. What needs to be set is the sync signal, and that can be set using a more advanced scanner. Turning the distributor not using a scanner will result in poor running vehicle. The marks on the balncer don't really mean alot like an old school engine with a timing light.

Also, a worn timing chain and distributor drive bushing will make the sync signal be off. I would also look at your plugs/wires/cap and rotor. Look into replacing them if they have age on them. I use factory Champion plugs I get from the auto parts store, but I buy the tune up kit from Mopar. These are pretty basic motors that don't usually require alot other than normal maintance.

If your idle is surging, then it may be time to do some simple maintenance.

clean the throttle body idle passage, clean/replace the idle control solenoid, and check for vacuum leaks -- particularly the plenum gasket on the bottom of the intake mainfold (remove the intake to do this)

IF you still have a surging idle after doing these, then look at going deeper and cleaning or replacing the other sensors.

having a scan tool like an MT2500 that allows you to read each sensor 'live' while the computer operates in closed loop, will allow you to see if any one sensor is causing the idle to bounce.

Couldn't hurt to replace the timing chain either, but that's going a bit deeper than 'routine maintenance'

Thanks for the help, the idle isnt surging . after restarts some times , idle is a little rough , after it runs awhile it smooths out. the engine in it has 90k on it. I have it timed right. it will ping too. I wondered if a computor flash would help. it acts like the computor is slow getting the timing under control??

Sure sounds line an intake plenum gasket leak to me.

look thru the throttle body with a flashlight, oil in the intake means the plenum gasket is leaking,or,you have lots of blowby thru the pcv valve

my ladder of success is missing some rungs

My first bet, plenum gasket. How many miles on the distributor on the 90k motor??

Leads to second bet, I had a LA 360 30 years ago that had unsteady idle. Guy put it on a scope at Precision Tune (Do they even exist anymore??), and graph showed the timing moving around at idle. Distributor shaft was worn and wobbling (bushing was okay). Replaced the distributor and all was well.

When I start it in the morning. it idles perfect . Its after I shut it off and restart it , it idles rough for a minute or so , but it wont idle rough every time after restart. theres nothing wrong with the plenumn gasket, I did change it when I changed the engine. the timing cycling is what Im wondering about , i changed the dist. and crank senser-didnt help

Your 1995 OBD1 is like my 1995 and when cold started the aîr fuel ratio is very rich, then leaned out over about five minutes to 14.7 as the coolant temp goes past 148 degrees.

If it runs rough when warm at 14.7 air fuel ratio
it is likely that one or more of your fuel injectors is partially clogged,
or your EGR valve is corroded inside and flowing when it should be off.... or maybe both.

Did you check the intermediate shaft (gear wear) and bushing (shaft wear) when the dist was out? (jumpy timing)

The sync can be set without a tool.It only has to be in a 5 degree window.Align the rotor with the #1 on the cap.It should be the trailing edge of #1.If you miss it you will run very rough (or no start) and it will not get better. You can move the dist at idle and know immediately when it is out.

When it idles rough ,which isnt all the time ,after a few minutes it smooths out, always starts easy. with a timing light on it - the timing mark is cycling back and forth. inside of intake is dry and clean . Thanks for the ideas
