69 Roadrunner's got a very narrow band of timing. The timing mark's slipped so I timed it by ear. I've done this thousands of times. 2 of my cars run fine that I've set by ear 6 yrs ago and 10 yrs ago, so PLEASE trust i know what I'm doing and please help me go forward not sideways. I thank you in advance for this. Anyway, time by ear, sounds/runs great but cranks extremely hard when up to operating temp. This with a stout battery and good aftermarket mini starter. If I retard slightly (I'm sure no more than 10 degrees) in runs like crap and backfires thru the carb. I had slight fuel issuse at the same time so i remove th AFB and....... I put the 750HP Holley off my Vette on this thing. It idles better, revs smoother. Still has the very narrow span from too retarded to too advanced. Difference is, while in the good running yet too advanced to crank while up to temp setting, it'll still crank way too slow, but merely for a split second because it lights instantly with this carb each time so far. Thoughts?

OK I will respect your wishes & no comments on the timing by ear. What worked for us on the stock car was to wire the ign hot input to the ECU (blu with yellow tracer) to an on/off toggle switch & get the starter cranking THEN switch on the ign. Unrelated to the cranking you might check/confirm rotor phasing/reluctor gap as there is another issue going on (or 2)

How about your starter? Does it turn over good with the coil wire pulled when hot? That will confirm it's ignition related or not.
