D44 represents 1953 dodge 241ci. block # began with 10001 if I recall correctly.

trwaters is our resident expert on early hemis. perhaps he can add something to this ? what are your plans for this engine ? I have one of these that has been disassembled for over 30 years stashed on the rack in the garage, but really never decided what to use it in.........

Nope, 241 270 are Dodge
331-354-392 are Chrysler

Virtually nothing of usefulness swaps.

Then there are the Desoto Hemis, they don;t swap much either. Plus some of the Chrysler Hemi stuff doesn't swap within Chrysler. I have no idea what Chrysler was thinking making 47 different engines that swapped nothing between them back then.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler each had their own bore spacing. To complicate matters, each division had two deck heights.

The Dodge 241 is really cute, although it's half the displacement of a stroker big-block. It looks like it'd fit in a Model A or other early '30s car without any sweat.

The 241 had valve covers that said Red Ram across the top with a ram between the two words, then DODGE across the bottom below the spark plugs.

Do a websearch, there are plenty of photos out there.

241 cu in Red Ram rated at 140 hp. Here's the original engine in my unrestored 53 Dodge Coronet convertible (picture doesn't want to attach - will try later). Not a powerhouse, but it would outrun almost everything produced back then. Set numerous track speed records & won the Mobilgas economy runs as well.

all the non interchangeability is what lead to the end of the early hemi motors, not all 241 had the red ram dodge logos on the valve covers,,they are highly sought after,,

At the same time GM had different V8s for each of their brands, no interchangeability there either. That's how it was in the old days.

Also, the more expensive the car, the more powerful the engine (generally). In the Chrysler world, from top to bottom: Chrysler, DeSoto, Dodge, Plymouth. So it stands to reason that the engines got smaller as one moved down the list.

My Grandpa sold DeSotos and Plymouths. If he'd been in a ritzier neighborhood he'd have been selling Chryslers and Dodges.

if you read on the early hemi motors you will see thaty chrysler says the early hemi program was stopped due to expense from all brands being totally different
