I am going to run a .750ish lift roller cam and have been doing some research on the supporting hardware. Is there a reason I would run tool steel retainers over titanium on the street? Other reasons I have yet to contemplate?

Thank you for any advice or feedback.

What I can say is that if the springs have a flat-spring damper between the coils, do NOT run ti retainers on the street. The damper will wear a groove into the retainer.

One of my customers in N.Y.(9 seconnd Phil,R.I.P. ) had that happen after 23,000 street and strip miles The inner dampener ate right through the Ti retainer The Ti retainer held the valves in place so he got away with no engine damage Tool steel from then on on any motor that has a inner dampener on the valve springs

The new lightweight steel retainers work pretty well and are a lot less expensive than Ti retainers. If you're not spinning it past 7000 rpm then you probably don't need Ti.

Ryan J put tool steel retainers on my heads. It was my understanding that theres no much difference in the weight.

I use to shift the 518 C.I. duster motor at or above 7200 one every run, I did that with both the Ti and tool steel retainers on the Eddy RPM heads No noticeable differences between the two types of retainers

I`m going on 13+ years with TI retainers and they`re fine and WAY lighter than standard tool steel units. The key is in spring prep and I detail all of the sharp edges on the springs so all the sharp edges are gone............

What I can say is that if the springs have a flat-spring damper between the coils, do NOT run ti retainers on the street. The damper will wear a groove into the retainer.

FWIW, my ti retainers had maybe 5K worth of street & strip time when I inspected them and found the damage from the dampers. Not sure how prepping the ends of the dampers would have made much difference since they're going to be rubbing up against the underside of the retainer regardless.

I just make it a rule of thumb to not use ti retainers w/ that style of spring as the result, especially because I know I'm not the only person who has experienced this. I've no problems w/ ti retainers on the street w/o flat-spring dampers and will be running new ti parts w/ the PAC springs Dwayne provided me for use w/ my .650" roller cam.

As far as "gouging" the retainers, it helps to remove sharp edges and learned that at Pettis years ago. As far as "wear marks" even steel gets em from my experience............
