I have a 1986 5.2 engine that's roller cammed. Can I put a roller cam from a 2002 magnum engine. Are there any differences in the lifters, which is my main concern.

The lifters are the same .

Here's is what I do when I see/have a question like this ... I go to rockauto.com and open up the model I'm curious about and then I look at the 2 different years I want to interchange to and see if they list the same part number , which is what I just did.

There are a couple of differences, which may make it hard to use such a late Mag cam in an earlier roller block.

1. The lack of oil holes in the camshaft journal will prevent oil getting to the rocker shafts, this is the killer.
2. The front of the cam is shorter so you can't put a mechanical fuel pump cam on it without some work. I don't consider this to be a deal breaker.

! am using a cam from an late 360/early 5.9 Mag in my '86 318 and it has both the holes and the slightly longer nose.

R.

Thanks John. I was going to put a regular flat tappet hydraulic camshaft and regular lifters in that 86 motor, but saw that the lifter bores were longer, and that those lifters would not work. I did put a regular hydraulic camshaft and lifter in a early 5.2 and magnum heads an it worked beautiful until that engine had to be rebuilt and I found a cracked main bearing cap. I had that 86 motor, so I thought I could put that camshaft in it until I saw that it was a roller. By the way to use a regular 4-barrel Edelbrock intake with magnum heads just drill new intake bolt holes to match the bolt pattern of the heads. Use magnum intake gasket, and it's good to go. Just some info I thought I would pass on. Thanks again for your help.

One more thing. If you use regular hydraulic camshaft with magnum heads on an early 5.2 you need to get longer push-rods. If I remember well they were 7.50 inches long. I have to look up my notes to make sure if you're interested.

Great advice. I started doing this a few years back and have had good luck with their site. I wonder if they know that they are being used as a point of reference for stuff like this!
