Every 3rd or 4th time I go to start my Durango the started fails to engage the flywheel and just spins. I can retry immediatly and it starts upo just fine. This problem only occurs when its below 40. The starter has been in there for about 2 1/2 years now and this is the first sign of a problem. Any ideas? Should I just replace the starter?

the contacs in there prob have some wear on them, and not hiiting ever time, after all it going on 10 yrs if it has not been changed already

mine did that for about a yr then it would click and some times spin, did that 6 mounths

took it to a starter shop and they put new contacs in and its been fine since, cost me about 65$

which I uped to the new small starter and mine was from a jy...but cam of a 97 rango

he said the rebuild kit for the toyota starter is the same, toyos dont have the nose on them to go in the dodge bell housing alinement hole but will work on them also

I dodnt know but they look alike..just FYI

IMO have the contacs replaced

The starter is realatively new 2+ years old. If I remember correctly the solenoid kicks the gear out and then it spins so would it really be the contacts? I though maybe it was an alignment issue or a burr on the shaft?

it kicks the drive out but the contacs do not hold and it lets go and spins

the contacs look like a washer on a shaft, then there is a u shaped flat bar the hits on both side to make contact

that shaft and washer spin as the u shaped bar rides on the edge of it making contac like a set of brushes, its made of copper and eats away from the arcing and pitts up the flats of the washer

the yota boys said you can r&r the thing and file the thing down and smooth any pitting and stuff and through it back together for a short fixbut its on the way out

some times its just got a spot or 2 on it and its the luck of the draw when it stops spinning for the contacs

mine was eat down to the nub,if you keep at it it will start the click.click every few clicks it might hit

if you take one apart you will see what I am saying

he showed me mine while it was apart and told me thats how it worked

try a jy for a good used one way cheaper than a reman or new, maybe take the one you got to a rebuilder and have them through a nippandenso silanode kit in it,(pardona on my spelling)

I have rebuilt a number of starters myself so I know what you're describing. I'll see if I have time to pull it this weekend and have a go at it.

you may get that sianoid kit from napa

I went to an alt/starter rebuilder in town

should nt be that hard,I was just lazy and let them do it,I had enuff witht the headers, mine have to come off even with a mini starter

maybe my new headers will be a little better, they look like they have room for a mini to come off

good luck with it,post what ya find
