Sunday Morning, Rachael and I said our goodbye's at Dale's, then went over to help Boone and Darren unload the big trailer before we left for Phoenix. We've had a long standing tradition of posing with our cars a certain way when we hurt the engines, and now it was Darren's turn...

Boone, showing off his Drag Week hardware.
Rachael and I rolled out of Owasso/Tulsa around mid-afternoon, and just south of Oklahoma City, realized that I had burned up the headlight switch on my truck. I had no clearance lights at all, so I just left the headlights on, turned on my four ways, and with Rachael following closely behind me continued on in the dark until we got into Texas.

We pulled into the same Texas rest area that we spent the night in last year on our return trip, and went to bed. I explained to Rachael that we would have to be moving at first light, and run hard all day if we were to make it to Phoenix without lights. She was a trooper, it was hard trucking all day Monday, and she kept up and never complained. We stopped for fuel and grabbed snacks only three times, and made it to within 30 miles of the house before we had to resort to the four ways again. Steve's buddy Jim Smiley would pick up the Red Dodge and Valiant Wednesday morning while I was at work, and transport it to Tucson.

I have to admit that I hope my little girl grows up that interested in the hobby - you sure are lucky! You guys absolutely went beyond the normal scope of helping someone out, at least for this day and age...

Last year, I threw together a list of all the Mopars, and how they fared on Drag Week, so this is the list for 2013:
#1 EDDIE MILLER 1970 PURPLE PLYMOUTH DUSTER Day 1 8.716-152.74 Day 2 8.693-155.96 Day 3 8.708-155.56 Day 4 8.744-156.59 Day 5 8.583-159.02 5 Day Average: 8.688-155.97
Eddie did what he does best, peeved off all the chevy boys, then rubbed their nose in it with a dominating performance in Pro Street, normally aspirated.

#2 MIKE CROW 1969 WHITE DODGE DARTDay 1 10.117-134.62 Day 2 10.199-133.46 Day 3 10.298-133.32 Day 4 10.222-133.30 Day 5 10.133-134.34 5 Day Average: 10.1938-133.808Children are made to be seen not heard. This little dart is clean, not visually stunning, but MUST be heard! With a stick, and a high rpm small block, Mike makes beautiful music on every pass. Mike Crow-Drag Week 2013

#3 RAY MEYERS BLACK 1967 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA Day 1 10.629-127.49 Day 2 10.592-127.98 Day 3 10.638-128.01 Day 4 10.624-126.96 Day 5 10.375-127.61 5 Day Average: 10.571-127.61
4 tenths slower than last year, going from a thundering, well-sorted Big Block, to a relatively un-tested G3 Hemi combo. I was impressed, actually, but he caught grief about it all week!

#4 TONY SANCHEZ 1969 AQUA AMC JAVELIN Day 1 10.752-124.76 Day 2 10.617-125.59 Day 3 10.749-125.69 Day 4 10.883-124.46 Day 5 10.539-126.06 5 Day Average: 10.708-125.31
Tony's 401 powered machine suffered charging and tranny issues, but after a quick exit from Drag Week last year, he was determined to conquer it this year. He was rewarded with 3rd place in Modified NA, as well as "Fastest AMC" for the effort!

#5 JOHN FARAONE 1972 SILVER VALIANT CHARGER Day 1 8.526-164.15 Day 2 8.477-161.90 Day 3 20.000-50.00 Day 4 8.707-160.77 Day 5 7.855-182.21 5 Day Average: 10.7130-143.806
The Aussies were indeed awarded the "Fastest Mopar" plaque, as Don prefaced, despite killing their average by only bumping the beams in St. Louis. The Charger was an outlandish assault on the senses, and so were the blokes herding it down the highway!

#6 RANDY HEINSELMAN 1970 IN VIOLET PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA Day 1 10.779-124.64 Day 2 10.868-123.81 Day 3 10.884-123.97 Day 4 10.866-124.60 Day 5 10.720-124.25 5 Day Average: 10.8154-124.254
Like Ray, Randy also slowed down about 4 tenths from last years times, but he did so by ditching the nitrous and moving out of a class of 8 second monsters! Doing so allowed him the opportunity to finish 3rd in Street Race Big Block Normally Aspirated, and take home some Drag Week 2013 hardware.

The Aussie car is really fast, and so cool, and they have certainly seen their share of struggles at Drag Week, but I kinda felt like Eddie got the short end of the deal with regard to the "Fastest Mopar" award. The rules state pretty clearly the award is for "lowest average ET".
Scott
I agree Scott, but my guess is Eddie was in on it, like maybe he thought it would mean more to them than him? Similar to this neat Nitrous Oxide Systems aluminum wall hanger I got in the mail from "All Motor Land" at "520 Big Block Drive" in Indiana! You wouldn't know anything about that would you?
#7 DARRYL FRARY 1969 TEAL DODGE DART Day 1 11.187-120.21 Day 2 11.181-120.11 Day 3 11.233-108.45 Day 4 11.252-119.85 Day 5 11.096-117.15 5 Day Average:11.1898-117.154
Darryl added a bigger cam, and switched from 3.73s to 4.56s this year in an attempt to get in the tens. He netted an average more than 2 tenths better than last year, but the heat kept him from his goal.

But when we got home and Boone looked at Dale and I and had the nerve to ask, "What are we going to build for next year?" We were ready to kill him! RIP Carroll Shelby. How a legendary racer and automobile enthusiast could look at a 4 door box with barely over 2 liters of 4 cylinder power, and say "Sure Lee, I can make a cool little hot rod out of that", is totally beyond me.
Then you have guys like James Reeves who decide to see just how far that concept can be pushed. The undisputed leader of the angry front scratcher crowd spent an entire week kicking the stuffing out of big heavy Detroit muscle and seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself in the process.

#10 SCOTT ABBOTT 1970 ORANGE PLYMOUTH ROADRUNNERDay 1 11.567-120.75 Day 2 11.531-120.03 Day 3 11.619-120.76 Day 4 11.591-118.71 Day 5 11.646-118.12 5 Day Average:11.5908-119.674 Scott and Kim Abbott do Drag Week right, they have fun, they help out and watch out for their fellow racers, and at the end of the week they plan to kick your tail! It's not easy sandbagging an 11.20 car to 11.60's every day, makes my head hurt just trying to do the math, but that's what is required to set your dial-in for the Daily Driver bracket race. Scott spotted everyone a hundredth this year, coming in with an 11.49 dial, when the orange bird is only legal to 11.50...but he still went through the field of 32 like a knife through hot butter! Congrats to the Hot Rod Drag Week 2013 Daily Driver Champions! Hot Rod Drag Week Daily Driver coverage

#11 CLARK LAMB 1968 BLUE PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA Day 1 11.587-116.74 Day 2 11.682-115.97 Day 3 11.582-116.55 Day 4 11.538-116.61 Day 5 11.569-115.98 5 Day Average: 11.5916-116.370
Clark's stock stroke small block a-body does it all well, looks, reliability, quick...just a perfect all-around street car. Clark promised it would be quicker at the 2013 edition of Drag Week, and true to his word, this year's average was nearly 3 tenths quicker, and 6 mph faster.
