LOL...look at all the haters. I'm with Pyper on this one. You all hate HIDs because YOU don't have them. as someone else has already pointed out, they are only annoying to other drivers if they are not adjusted correctly. We're in 2013 folks -- halogen bulbs with a 20 foot reach don't cut it any more. Get with the times...

We hate them because they are blinding to on coming drivers. It has nothing to do with not having the import wannabe junk blue lights. I have no trouble at all seeing with my sylvania silver stars and they don't bother other drivers. Of course some people don't give a crap about how what they do affects others.

I deal with HIDs all day long. When they're OEM installations they are tolerable at best. They have improved over the years and the 2014 Mercedes seem to be a bit easier on other drivers. Naturally, the vehicle buyers love the vision at night.
Aftermarket installations are quite different. I have yet to see an installation with properly designed reflectors and lenses. There are tons of bulb kits that stuff HIDs in halogen housings. They are horrible. The reflectors need to be totally different for the HID bulbs. Drivers with these cars enjoy the light because it's scattering all over the place and lighting up the whole neighborhood.

Properly designed, they're okay. Sadly, few cars have properly designed lights. Nobody remembers seeing the good ones because they're not memorable.
Everybody remembers the bad ones because it generates negative emotions.

If you're blinding oncoming traffic, YOU are NOT really all that SAFE. Obviously they're installed and you're convinced that all is well...and maybe it is. But that aforementioned "brake check" was for a reason. I sincerely hope that it doesn't take a blinded driver meeting you in a head-on collision to change your way of thinking.

Feets covered it best. Generally, HID conversion bulbs do not sit in the same position within the housing as the halogens the housings were designed for. This causes light to be reflected in directions not originally intended (think of how a Maglight flashlight adjusts the beam from pinpoint to flood). Add in some cheaply made housings and a lack of any attempt to re-aim the lights afterwards and you've got a scattered mess.

I have projector housings (with HIDs) in place of the stock driving lights on my lifted truck. The beam cutoff is such that it does not go above the door handle of most cars crossing in front of me at an intersection. I run these and no headlights while in town because although my headlights are still legal height, they are annoying to other drivers when I am behind them.

Trust me...I don't have cheap headlamps...I bought some of the most expensive Hella's out on the market. The light spread is exactly what its supposed to be. The lenses are ribbed and frosted. The HIDs have the block off plate on the bulb so as to not hit the others drivers in the eyes. When there are Lexus SUVs, Land Rovers, Hummers with HIDs and blinding everyone on the road...no one says anything....I drive around other cars which are low to the ground...buckets...

I was referring to aftermarket assemblies in general, not your Hellas specifically.

Having said that, your comments regarding "Mr Brakecheck" and "aimed at my knees at 20 feet" could very easily place you in the category I was talking about.

Put a stock headlight back in one side, face off to a wall at about 25' and 50' and compare where the light is hitting the wall between the two sides. Not exactly a technical solution but it will give you a good idea of what's going on.

You're still not getting it (or you're just in denial). HID and incandescent lamps are completely different. The reflectors are not compatible (regardless of the price or quality of Hella lamp you utilizes...I'm guessing they are the vision plus ECE). It's an optical mismatch.

Take it from someone (me) who designed, tested, and manufactured OEM headlamps for several years (for a Hella subsidiary no less). There is a reason the HID retrofits are labeled "for off-highway use only". They do not meet FMVSS/DOT or ECE standards.

Here's the article that explains it all:

I must just still be too young as the HIDs don't bother me at night!
I am a tech and Audi and MB gold certified as well as dodge and am trained in them, so they don't surprise me as I'm used to them. But the aftermarket only has one or two that are actually built for hid bulbs. But if they are aimed correctly they pose no problem. Incorrectly adjusted they will blind. And those are the only ones we remember. Kudos on the upgrade. And remember folks live and let live.

Plates on the bulbs don't help if the light is bouncing off the reflector and scattering through the lens.

What temperature bulb did you get? Something around 6500k is going to be ultra bright to others.

I bought used vehicles w/aftermarket HIDs.

Best color is 4300k. Anything higher is stupid.

I have fogs with 3000k. Can actually see better with those.

I don't recommend HIDs on High beams because of the constant on/off nature of high beams will reduce life of the HID bulb.

I just have the HIDs in the HiLo...the Hi Beams are just H4s with a relay harness feeding straight off the battery
