there is a "thing/cover/whatever" wrapped around the valve springs. This broke on one cylinder. See picture. Found a picture on the web which shows it new. My questions are:

- whats that thing called
- What is it doing, is it necessary
- easiest way to replace. Heads off?
- common problem?

( I know I have to search for the small parts in the engine. Hope I find them in the sump. Cross your fingers..... )

That thing is a damper for the spring.Same as the flat coil inside the valve springs we are used to.No room in the beehive spring for the flat style.Likely sitting on the windage tray/ oil pan gasket. You might try a small magnet thru the oil drain plug but there isn't much room. You can change them without removing the cyl hd.You will have to fab or borrow the special tool.

Do you have an aftermarket cam with those springs? There was a problem YEARS ago with 6.1 springs breaking due to a change in production.

Swap them for a set of PAC 1235 if you've got an aftermarket cam now that you can. There is a Miller tool just for this purpose, but it really is a 2 person job.

no, the cam is stock. Thanks for the link. I ordered 2 new springs and now I read the spring rates did change too? Our dealer is not aware of it. Ok, its Germany, they don't know that much .

Unfortunately I found more material in the other head and in the oil.

Guess I need to replace them all for a good aftermarket set. I'm afraid that this will happen again.

Any ideas of a good brand? Didn't search yet. Maybe CompCam?

Today I found some more of them damaged. All intake springs. I turned them and I looks like the "insulators" can't turn 360° fully. they are hitting the edge of the head. In the picture I'm pointing on it. Can't imagine that this is normal. Maybe those insulators are kinda more widen? Gone loose?

My 6.1L 6spd Challenger broke an intake valve spring at about 10,000 miles. shut it down no major damage. Dlr replaced all springs, that intake valve and the rocker arm as it also was damaged. Push rods were fine. Yes, I had the rear tires lit up in second gear on the rev limiter.

IT'S NOT THE SPRING, IT'S THE DAMPER!!!

Looks like you need to replace all the dampers, bummer. Looks like you don't need to replace any springs unless you want to.

IMO, I'd stay away from the springs with the green stripe. Search out the ones with the blue stripe. Dropped a valve on my 09 SRT with only 10,654 km on it. After a little research, a few members here, and on another two forums all echoed the same disappointing failure with the green striped springs.
Just something to be aware of. BTW, 25,000 km later and many hard pulls, it's been flawless.

Replace them all with the drop in PAC's or a fresh set of stockers. I wouldn't reuse any of those springs if you've had damper problems.

You can run 6.1 exhaust springs on intake and exhaust with a .100 to .130 set of shims on the intake side. Guys ran .580 lift cams like that for YEARS in the LXforums world until springs started becoming more common.

I would run the correct PAC1235 spring and be done with it. At least you'll have the right springs for a cam later

my springs are yellow

ok, got many good input. The springs from the link require the dampers too?

How can I tell my dodge dealer about stock springs with a blue stripe? hahaha, I see serious problems here.....

Got a link from the FABO board too which is very interesting too:

didn't checked it out yet but is there a seat/retainer for the valve bottom? Or are the clamps of the damper the seat? In the case if I use the other springs from above w/o damper do I need a retainer below the valve to avoid valve movements sideways?

cool, 1.5 years later and I still have the question about if shims and locators are required with PSI LS1511 springs...

I wouldn't run any spring without a locator, and shims are dependent on what your install height is.
