I'm seriously thinking of purchasing a B&M pan for my 727. It holds 4 extra qts. of fluid, which is what I'm looking for. Does anyone know if the 4 additional qts. of fluid would compare to a cooler..as far as temperature goes? I know..BOTH would be ideal, but I'm thinking just the pan would be good..since I don't race it that much. Please give me some opinions. Thanks in advance! Randy B.

I've always done both the deep pan and the tranny cooler, but to ad to this question I'd like to know where everyone mounts their coolers? I've always mounted mine on the front of the radiator but the cooler and lines need to be removed every time the motor has to come out. I've heard of some guys mounting them in the front wheel-well area, and some mount them towards the rear of the car. Will any of this work on a street car, or is it just best to have it on the front of the radiator? I hate blocking a portion of the radiator.

The cooler needs a good flow of air and protection from debris. Rear mount often uses an electric fan to create air flow - through a hole in the trunk floor for example. In the fenderwell on a street car I'd be worried about kicking up a rock or other debris. Unless you want to cut the body for ducts I think in front to the rad is best.

I run an auxilary electric cooling fan in front of my aluminum radiator. I really don't want to impede any more air with a trans cooler...that's why I believe the deep pan alone will be good for my set-up,and usage. Heck..the trans survived for 11 yrs. of harsh duty..with just a Mopar Performance extra capacity pan...which wasn't much more than stock!

Like you said Randy... your set up has worked for years
with out issue... the added volume will be fine without
a cooler if you still run the radiator cooler... you
can mount a cooler in the rear somewhere with a small
fan on a thermo switch if you want... that way you
get more line(thats volume and cooling) then it turns
on when/if it needs too... if you dont want it in the
rear see if you can mount one flat between the radiator
and the front of the crank... with either a fan or
just a small wind deflector to direct air up through it
but then it only works when rolling
EDIT
This is the cooler I mounted on the bottom of the
radiator... I dont have a a cooler in the radiator
so I had to put one somewhere... this is on my 518
trans with a 5000 stall conv and OD so when its in
OD I have 9% slippage at low rpms.. so far its been
working fine in the miles I have on it at about 90*
temp on the Woodward week

Thanks for the info,Mike! Bob Kobylski said he has a B&M deep pan on the shelf.. that Jeff was going to install on his Hemi Dart..but had ground clearance issues. I'm glad he read my post! Bob's a GREAT guy..just like his brother,Jeff was!

Get a transmission temperature gauge and put it in the 1/8" port hole in the B & M pan. Only way you'll know if your hot or not. I like the Autometer electric trans. gauge.Uses a 1/8" sender.
Once that oil gets hot, with no cooler it is tough to bring it down especially with extra fluid. Once it's hot it's hot.

I use the water temp gauge and another water temp
sensor for my trans temp... I use a toggle switch
so I can flip between the two and read on the same
gauge... works great

And why would you do that unless your on a very tight budget.

Why not... temp is temp and I was running out of room
for added gauges

I like that tranny cooler, looks long enough to cool the fluid and doesn't block the radiator.

Bob.. so far it works very well... if you notice it
has a large diameter tube(1 1/4") that makes a loop
across and back... and with my set up its keeping the
trans happy... I think I got that cooler at work
but I dont really remember

The extra fluid reduces the temperature rise during a run, doesn't do much to dump heat. The oil touching the inner pan walls quickly cools and prevents hot oil from reaching the wall. Unlike a radiator, the fluid does not circulate, it just falls out of the internals and sits on top of the remaining oil.
Read Mackerle.
Improve it by:
1. sand blast
2. black anodize inside and out
3. if you have good nerves, weld aluminum ribs or posts to the floor and inner walls to pull heat from the hottest fluid. Examine any modern OEM aluminum pan for ideas.
4. vertical mask (16 gauge) on both sides to block header heat radiation

could you drill & tap the pan [ 8/32 or 10/32 ] to bolt 16ga. steel vertical "walls" to the floor instead of welding ? or would that just not transfer the heat very good to the aluminium pan ?

Thanks for the modification ideas! I would think with the properties of ceramic coating, that would be a better choice to use..in place of the anodizing..especially to deflect header heat away from the outside of the pan.
