Unfortunately with all I got As for staging I am as shallow as possible. Only way to KNOW where you are in the beams each time. Stage as shallow as possible and adjust from there to get the R/T's you are after. Again unforunately those two tales are very similar

I stage a little different than most. I footbrake (true footbrake, no transbrake, no 2-step) and even though my car is very consistant, it reacts slow. If I just barely dink the 2nd light on and leave on the bottom amber bulb, my reaction time is in the .09 range. If I actually go full deep (turn off the pre stage bulb), after a few passes I get comfortable with deep staging, and I'm -.006 red. My solution is to go 1/2 deep, meaning turn on the 2nd bulb and then roll in just a bit more, but leave the pre stage light lit. A lot of old timers call this method "bump racing". Most will tell you that it is difficult at best to be sucsessful at, and I will tell you that it takes a lot of practice to get it right every time. When you race like this, you have to be mindful of your dial in also because where you stage will effect your ET. In my case there is .010 sec difference between shallow staged and full deep staged. It might not be for everyone, but, it works for me. If you are in the lane beside me and you see my top amber flicker then stay lit, you're gonna need your "A" game, 'cause the old man is probably gonna drill you! Brian

I stage as shallow as possible on the standard .500 tree but roll in deep on the .400 pro... my car reacts super fast

John, In my dragster, I was taught by a good racer to use the slow backup procedure and just turn the lights on and then back off while backing up very slowly. Sitting there with no lights on it doesn’t take much movement to turn on the top bulb and makes staging the long dragsters much easier. At least I though so.
From what you wrote, I take it the racer in question is backing up and cycles the lower bulb and then sits there and leaves the top bulb on; and driving right into stage when the opponent turns on their top bulb. As you said nothing illegal there, but certainly causes a rush for the opponent.

I know that MOST dragsters run a glide but if you do that with a 727 you will blow the sprag... you need ABOUT 4' in the forward motion to make sure the sprag is set

Yes this is what they are doing. Both lights are never off.
I deal with that also, but most of the racers that do it are slower than me, leaving first. Before I ever turn a light on, I make sure I am ready to go(and depending on who it is, it could take a while ), then when I turn my top light on, they go in and I still got approx 7-10 seconds to get in. I pretty much treat them like someone that double bulbed me. Let'm sit there and stare at that tree. Wanna look way from it? I dare you. Want to play games? OK with me.

The holding back on the staging plays into their hand and the wrong way to go about it for me. I'm on pump gas and most of them are on alcohol. In a week or to I will be too so it may change my thinking. The carb for my Duster went out this week for the change-over to alcohol and will be going on soon. The Daytona will be sporting a toilet when it returns.
