I checked 15 pages of current posts and the Archives first.

Stock 727 in a '78 pickup (360 2 bbl) was way low on fluid, only Dexron III available so that was used to get it down the road. Within that 30 mile trip it developed a slight vibration about 35mph (possibly not related to trans at all but mentioning just in case) and I could smell "hot trans". Couldn't quite tell if it was hot bands or fluid leaking on exhaust.
Going out today to drop the pan and have a look inside. What fluid are you guys using now? Stick says Dexron II, I've been told Type F because it provides better grip on the bands and of course Mopar ATF 3/4.

Guide me oh wise ones.

Any of the current Dexron will be OK as will type F. ATF 3/4 is for OD transmissions.

Good to see you still around.

Dextron is the recomended fluid for Mopars.

I hear that the type F is the same stuff that B&M sells as "Trick Shift fluid. It is supposed to give firmer shifts.

Used only Type F in my '68 rr and funny how it is getting hard to find a national auto parts chain to carry more than about six bottles of it at a time did firm up the shifts

What ever fluid you like, or what hits the pocket book, but sounds as if your trans needs a rebuild??

This is what I'm afraid may be the case. I dropped the pan and it didn't smell horrible so I threw in a new filter and I just topped it off with Dex/Mercon from Wally World ($17/gal). I'll road test tomorrow and see how it does.

Thanks for the info guys.

Realized this morning that I didn't .
I have 2 choices when doing this stuff:
1)Work in near-constant pain and maybe forget a step.
2)Work under the influence of painkillers and maybe forget a step.
At least I'm only out a couple quarts of fluid since I was "leak-checking" my fabbed up drain plug prior to filling fluid.

Guess I better

Sorry but that just makes me giggle.

Finished with the help of a lot of cursing, need to go get more ATF and road test...with fingers crossed.

A hoist has moved even farther up my "wish list".
