Yep, I know a few of them kinda guys. Get all butt hurt when I drive my pump gas small block Duster through the gate, and run as fast as their fill in the blank big block car.

There is a guy at our local track that has a 440 Duster that goes mid 11's and he and I have been track buddies for several years...nice guy.

When he first saw the Duster run (first night out) he walks up to me after a 10.3-something lap and says "Now there ya go, put a big block in there, huh?" I say no, just a mild 416 with iron heads. He laughed and looked at me like I was nuts.

At the trailer, I see him and his buddies walking over and yes we had the hood off and yes, he left with his feelings hurt. So much so that I've seen him at the track many times since and he won't even look at me let alone talk to me.

I've had several make the comments that it "just cannot" be a small block. Once after a lap a guy walks by the car and gives me a dirty look after peeking between the fenders. Found out that they had just run a 9.98 for the first time. In a back halfed, light weight, fiberglass, lexan, etc...Valiant with a 500" Indy head motor. Anyone that would listen to him, he was 100% positive we had Nitrous on the car. "No f-ing way" he said about "that thing" going that fast without it.

People are so funny...

It never fails - I'll make the first pass of the night and 3 or 4 guys will wonder over to take a look. It's usually a 10.70 something but it doesn't make any noise - and they saw me drive it in the gate. They come over and look under the hood and they can't find the engine behind all the AC, PS, hoses and smog junk. Then when they spot the turbo they suddenly understand - although most think it's a supercharger. Then I usually hear about how they hate turbos or power adders, and how it would be so much better if I did it NA the old-school way. That's a tall order if you still want to drive it much and have any manners at all. I'll keep my AC and power steering thank you very much. LOL

I'm always polite and wave when I pass them in their tow-rigs on the way home... and dream about what the combo would feel like in a 2800# race car.

Why would anyone get mad because a smallblock Mopar can outrun their bigblock ?? Who cares as I would want to tell them they have a good running car and then I would want to know the combo as I always like to know their combo's as I figure I may learn something. Anything can run fast in the right combo and I have learned that these smallblock Mopar strokers run real strong. And I am glad to see the Mopar smallblock run good because its a Mopar ! Some bigblocks run faster then smallblocks and some dont. It all comes down to power to weight. The main reason I run a bigblock in my 63 is because I always loved how good the Max Wedge cars ran in their day and thats how I want my 63 to be. Like a Max Wedge car I want a bigblock in it. If I had an A-body like a Demon I would not hesitate to but a smallblock in it as I know they run so good. My feelings is that if someone has a combo that runs good let them know and learn all you can from their combo. And if you have a great running combo dont gloat and put down others combo's as that would make that person a showoff. Anything that runs good I try to learn the combo as it may help me and my combo go faster someday. ron

Great posts. I had built an Aspen Wagon stocker about 2000 and would go out and put down 12.30's. Non Mopar racers would walk over and see a cast iron intake and a Thermoquad and a full interior and just scratch their heads and walk away. Those were the days.

And I thought I was alone with my experiences.

Try running 8.0's against a field full of BB Mopars with either nitrous, blown alcohol, or supercharged with the only car with all the stock chrome, glass, trim. The new guys would run over to see and then go tell their friends that you had a million dollars in your motor or whatever BS they could make up as the excuse for you kicking their ARS. Even the Mopar magazine editers would make up BS to make out like you were doing something over the top to run the numbers.

I owned a 340 once before too, I used it to crank over my 440

To answer your question I'm not really sure, I prefer big blocks but Mopar power is Mopar power.

I have seen both sides on this. I built a 71 Challenger pump gas street strip car. When I first ran it, it only ran 13.50. Guys would ask if I had a small block. No its a low comp 440. took a few months of tuning and driving got it to 11.90. Then they would want to know what I did. It was the same just dialed it in. Back in 1996 at SAC there yearly Mopar show I won the whole thing against a small block 4spd Valiant. He was the track favorite and I was a nobody that showed up. Pissed a lot of people off. Oh well thats Drag racing.

1970 duster, 2600+ pounds, a set of Edelbrock heads he ported himself while Tom Hemphile gave him pointers, SOLID LIFTER cam, tunnel ram with two 750 holley, powerglide with 1.80 gear set, 14-32's, not sure on cubic inch but its under 500 and a stock block. He's almost always in the 8.80-9.00's at an average 1400-2400 corrected alt track.

Boy, if you only knew how much that post is right in my wheelhouse....lol

Gary (Unlawfl) and I used to have some epic smallblock/bigblock threads on here. Many of the old timers I am sure remember them.

For about 4 seasons I raced in a ten flat shootout points series up at Mid Michigan Motorplex( Stanton). Very competitive bunch of guys in that class, stock suspension, no ladder or 4 link, 12 measured inches of DOT or a ten inch slick allowed, mufflers required yada, yada on a 4 tenths pro tree.
There were usually about 18-22 cars show up. In the 4 years I raced in it, there were a total of 3 small block cars. Myself, a 434 Nova, and a firebird with a 383 smallblock stroker and a blower. All the rest were all big blocks. That is a pretty good sampling size, as cars kinda came and went that didn't consistently go rounds over those years. There was a 200 pound weight break I got being smallblock N/A, but my car weighed 50 pounds over what a N/A big block was required to weigh for the class.
Lot of doggy, and shaggy, cut up, lightened big blocks out there, even crammed into A bodies that are cut up and still run mid tens or worse. Its not unusual at all, its WAY the norm

The old 100 pounds equals .010 works out pretty good if the car hooks.
