I'm installing a non-factory transmission in my 67 Barracuda. I have to cut out the center section of the transmission cross member and rebuild it to accommodate the extra width of the new transmission.
I know that this is an important part of the structure of the car. I'd like to get some ideas on how others have done this modification.
Thanks in advance.

How much was cut out? If both lower support holes are still present, then the lower support can take part of the load. I did not cut all of the channel out of my crossmember, then I boxed it in with 1/4" or 3/16" strap (forgot how thick, just some left over in the garage.)

view from the rear.

there are 2 layers of 1/8" thick steel instead of the crossmenber.
i took a 1/8" steel pipe about 8" in diameter and about 6" long.
cut the pipe open at the weld and then forced it open until it was the right contour of the floor.
then heated the pipe and bent to match the reverse curve of the floor.
after it cooled down i cut the pipe into 2 pieces so the curves matched each other.
welded one strip directly to the floor and the top of the crossmember.
drilled several holes in the other strip and plug welded and continuous welded it on both sides of the lower strip to the upper strip.
then welded the lower part of the strip to the bottom of the crossmember.

Not sure yet how much I need to cut it out. It will probably be this coming weekend before I can dig into it too far. I'm attaching a picture for reference. I need to cut off the unused portion of the stud (on the trans) that's hitting, then I can get a better idea of what's needed.
I was thinking about cutting out the "hoop" then making two wider flat hoops that would sandwich the cross member and get welded onto the cross member. These in turn would get boxed as well.
