Im toying with an idea here.I have my late dads 93 Dakota.3.9 5 speed 8.25 rear with 3.55 suregrip. He custom ordered it.could I use the trans and rear end in my 74 duster?the perches are within 1/2 inch of the dusters rear.but I really want to use the five speed.will the bellhousing bolt up to a v8?

Gear ratios in transmission may be set up more truck (low first gear) than you would normally see on a car transmission.
Also, I don't think the transmission will fit without some major cutting of tunnel.

the dakota trans in 92 up are smaller in size than 91 down, might fit better but the rear end is to wide. But the axle could be narrowed or find a A Body 8 1/4 and use the sure grip from the dakota rear. The bell housing might not fit well as it uses a 11" flywheel?

The strength of the V6 trans will be marginal behind a V8.

yes the hydro clutch bell housing from the v-6 bolts to the SB v-8

you can use the v-6 flywheel on a 318 v-8

there are a few differnt trans to pick from for the 5 speed.

ax-15 which has the 9 bolts holding the bell to the trans

a535 which is looks close to a 833OD unit as far as size fit

nv 4500 5 speed which is a low 1st gear and close to a 435 granny 4 speed in size. slightly bigger with 5 th gear.

I am in the middle of the same thing, adding a 5 speed to my D-150 stepside.

I have the v-6 fly/bell/hydro system from a 88 d-100 truck, 92- d-250 2x nv4500 5 speed trans.

IMHO, the a535 or ax-15 would be the best fit in a car, both will need xmember and trans tunnel work. but the a535 looks to have been the replacment for the 833/833OD 4 speeds in the 2x v-6 and v-8 trucks.

now the kicker...if you go with the a535 make sure you get a shifter with it. this trans is a pink elephant with a golden nugget shifter.

if you even find the trans with a shifter it is anywhere from 650-900 bux. you can get a reman for 650$ with 12 month/unlimeted milage BUT NO SHIFTER!

I moved to the next trans the NV4500 5 speed for the trucks.

the ax-15 from a DAK is the 2nd choise in a car IMHO, it is small and has it own v-6 bellhousing with 9 bolt retaining the bell to trans...also have them with intergrated bell and trans case(none removable bell.

here are some pics to ID them, first up is the BIG$$$ light duty a535

another pic, this is a ax-15 4x4 unit, the tail housing would be different for 2x but it gives an idea of the size over all.

this is the 92 NV4500 5 speed from a 92 d-250 2x truck,a little big for a car.

I bet I could make it fit though.

so post up what 5 speed is in the DAk you have.

the other thing going into a car is fabing up the hydro clutch system. can be done ez and rather cheap with the right parts sorted out.

If you have a a535 in there, It should bolt to the 833OD mech linkage bellhousing for the late A-bodys. that would be almost a bolt in.

looking at the bell pic, the v-6 hydro bell has the larger bearing retainer hole and both trans bolt patterns. so the 833 OD bolts to it as well as any granny gear 4-5 speed.

I will say the a535 is light duty and have heard they will blow if to much v-8 is added to them. imagine the trans tunnel looking like it got a blast of buckshot from a 12gauge.

but a v-8 A-body with a 5 speed 3.55 gears would be a fun ride to drive around in.
