Someone recently broke my mirror so I had to resort to the old stand by duct tape until my new mirror arrived. When removing the duct tape it left glue residue all over my door panel. Whats the best way to remove this without hurting the clear coat ?

thanks !

I have been using acetone to clean up certain parts lately. It works great but you need to check and make sure it doesn't hurt anything first. I have used it on professionally painted parts, aluminum, rubber trim and stainless with no issues.

3M Decal and adhisive remover. Acetone will have effects on the clear coat.

If you can find it, De-Solv-It is excellent. Great degreaser, too. Regards, Chase

yes and I used to keep it for hard to clean oil painting brushes but its dangerous it ignites with no warning. as one of my instructors at Memphis college of art warned even old rags that are dry that had denatured alcohol are combustible with no warning. Be very careful with it.

Lacquer Thinner unless you have to protect painted areas then don't use it!!! Good luck to you.

Most glues and adhesives (tapes) are based on petroleum solvents such as heptane (light) or mineral spirits (heavier). My suggestion is always try mineral spirits first. It won't hurt any paint or rubber and you may already have some around (charcoal lighter fluid). jnkgal makes a good point - ANY rag that has solvents or chemicals on it can self combust if you just throw it in a pile. When done, hang the rag over a fence (chain link) for a few hours to evaporate the solvents. Then you can wash or safely dispose without lighting up your shop.
