There are no stupid questions. If a Q bothers me (which doesn't happen) then there's something bothering me & it's not the Q being posted in cyberspace. I'd say they were referring to the fact that a coil can overheat if there's not enough ballast & that's dependant somewhat on the RPM range as at higher RPM there's less saturation time between cycles & you can get by with less ballast for more spark to make up for the shorter saturation time. My next purchase in that area is going to be an E coil & run full 12V & an HEI dyna mod module that was given to me (I'd never purchase a chebby part) . An overheated coil would not make the eng run hot if that was the Q

what were you reading?? i agree with RR above on all points, no such thing as a stupid question, and a coil by itself can over heat for stated reason but not cause an engine over-heat.

i think he was referencing a different issue that the 4th coil fixed. if you're having poor flow threw the t-stat what have you looked into? have you pulled it and made sure it's opening all the way? there are a host of reasons or issues that can cause poor flow. lets hear what/where you are at with troubleshooting

over heating only after sitting in traffic, steady climb to 200 + .. radiator is griffin hi- horse power, just put on there dual fan system ..still climbs, watching the water flow when the thermostat is opening is slow, pull the thermostat, flows like raging river.. pulleys are pretty close to 1+1 , hi-flow water pump...looking at the thermostat, it looks small, 1 inch opening..( doesn't look like could flow quickly)
Car is 70 dodge challenger 440 cu.in.solid cam (nothing raticle )aluminum heads poss 425 hp...and yes I have checked the gauges, they are correct..

for the want of $10 i would head over to NAPA and get their top of the line stat, put both yours and the NAPA one in boiling water and see if there is a difference. the other thing to look at is the stat seating correctly when installed? i had on cocked once and couldn't for the life of me figure out the issue until i actually took the hose off the neck and looked down there....... car never overheated but like yours, got warm in traffic.

Sitting in traffic is the key here.

Airflow thru the radiator is your problem, not the thermostat.

Generally speaking, low engine/vehicle speed overheats are airflow thru the radiator related. High vehicle speed overheats are water flow related. If your thermostat was an issue you would be seeing this on the highway, not sitting in traffic.

with the griffin set-up ..I have maximum air flo...,seems like I don't have water movement..the dual fan suck some serious air. I thought the as you guys though...

No you don't have maximum airflow. Airflow isn't just the radiator. You have a problem with airflow, air into/out of or thru the radiator.
