Literally hundreds of millions of cars have been built with cast pistons. I am sure that tens of thousands have gone down the strip in less than 13 seconds. I have seen some pretty beat up cast pistons that have been dinged by screws, nuts, valves, etc. They generally do NOT disintegrate from this kind of abuse.
Put them in a high rpm motor or run a lot of NOS past them, especially with lean A/F ratios, and they'll come apart. But I have in my collection some very high dollar forged pistons, 2618 alloy, that are pretty melted too. Face it, for the kind of use this 394 Olds is going to see, almost any piston will get the job done.
Now to the real question, has the OP followed my lead on Doc Frohmader's 394 olds buildup yet? Doc says he took 303 grams out of EACH rod/piston combo. That's 2/3 of a pound out of EACH hole. That is worth considering for any engine.

Yea, I was working my way over to the HAMB but my piston vendor posts over there hehe ! As far going the hybrid route with other parts, my crankshaft is already being drilled for the pilot bearing. I will call the guy in PA. Thanks! Quote:

If you want good advice for that motor ask questions on the HAMB

Here's a seasoned veteran describing the pitfalls of using cast...
All real, seen it myself...
Then another take...
'Cast will work with no problems'...
I love the internet...
how the piston fails really doesn't matter, if your tune is off and you get detonation, bad things happen regardless of cast vs forged, the pounding that the bearings take can force you to have to rebuild the engine, regardless of what happens to the pistons.
hard metal goes down the intake and starts pounding a piston, again, doesn't really matter at that point if you have a forged or cast piston...it's time for an engine rebuild.
I will echo that for the mild build the original poster is looking at building, I don't see much of a reason why he NEEDS forged pistons over cast or hypers.
it's not like he's talking about feeding it 15 psi of boost with meth injection
