I met some local car guys and racers at a local strip mall last night to bs a bit then a few races were tied up and off we went to Georges Air Force Base to get it done. I took my car home and drove w/a couple of friends and saw some good races w/a new young buck gettin it done in his small block Nova which can`t be any faster than maybe mid 11`s on motor. A few other guys got it done and it was interesting to see a locar Chrysler car salesman I know rompin his uncorked Baracuda fast back 408 small block. You would never think we could hang out at the base for hours, race and not have one cop show............some of the trucks from the local docks even stopped to watch. I`m not promoting street racing but no one was drunk, drugged out..........no fights or trash throwing and even some younger families were there w/their kids. Got to see a friend make some runs for the first time in over 5-years in his beautifull Dart as well. I think we will be seeing more of this stuff around here as all we have is an 1/8th mile track an hour+ away and a 3 hour ride to Famoso.........I may get some slicks mounted and go and try to de-throne the young buck but still not sure yet...............

If you were "on" the base I would say technically you weren't "street" racing as it isn't a public place per se. Not sure how much better off you would be if something were to go awry tho...

Where they racing on one of the runways or taxiways or on the apron or one of the roads on the base? If I remember correctly the main runways are over four feet thick concrete for the heavy lift aircarft

Actually they race on a regular road running parallel to air base road right AFTER the housing area and even the security patroll truck didn`t mess w/us. I`m still not sure if I will race but we`ll see.

There is no reason to hate to say it.....

Golf courses, basketball courts, baseball diamonds, hockey rinks, football fields, running tracks, tennis courts......you name, I can get to any number of them in minutes, yet I have to drive hours to get to a dragstrip, then sit in LONG HOURS of traffic to get home, at ridiculous gas and toll prices, as there isn't a SINGLE track in my entire state, or Mass. So guess what???

I have 3 perfect lanes of concrete, with shoulders on each side, straight and flat, no on/off ramps and shutdown forever, 3 miles from me. If I get pinched, or crash....it's on me.

F the state and anyone with a problem. They don't like it???

THEN ALLOW A TRACK TO BE BUILT IN A FREAKIN' STATE THAT HAS ACRE AFTER ACRE AFTER ACRE OF !!!!!!WOODS!!!!!

Had a great time last night.
There is still nothing that compares to making a pass on the street.
Sorry to the Haters!
No racetracks in So Cal anymore.
There is many streets safer than Irwindale!
Just my 2 cents
And yes I am a Street Racer!

I am not , but I do spectate from time to time.
The penalties are just too rich for me.
That being said , our old playground was over a mile long with no cross streets and only one way in. Industrial , with a river and rail road tracks , most of the businesses it served were closed on Fri. Sat. nights and it was as safe as you can get without a safety crew standing by. The rare truck delivering there ( grain elevators mostly )got through with out a problem. Then came the speed bumps. And the truck drivers complained that they were beating their suspension to death for no reason. Then the curves and curbs on the straight away to eliminate any chance of side by side racing.
I always thought it was the perfect spot for it and the law knew where everybody was during the hours people went there.
They used to let it go until someone did something stupid or got hurt ( usually both ) , but finally they had enough.
Now the cars run in areas that present way more danger to the general public. But part of that comes with living in a state where anything I might enjoy is either illegal or frowned upon.

The main problem is when a spectator gets hurt or killed, then it gets classified as "drag racing" and we as racers get the black eye again.

Had an incident in Jacksonville MANY years ago..people racing at the closed airport, car had a wheel come off or suspension failure and a kid got killed.Because of that,to this date we have NO race track in the North Florida area. The city will not even consider having one because of what happened long ago.The city council even wrote regulations that now there will be mufflers and early curfews if a race ever is run here.

What a shame that all of these closed AFB's cannot be used for regular, organized race activities. Be it drag racing, auto-x, skid pads, drifters, etc...

could be a big pay day for the city or county or whoever is in charge of that area. municipality's are hurting for money and this would be a great way for them to snag a bunch of "drag racers" and cash in. Especially since you kind of disclosed the location

When there are no proper racing facilities within a given distance, there's gonna be street racing.
Seems to me that if you had a good surface, fairly remote location, no possibility of traffic, animals, hikers, etc and the spectators were restricted from the top end area, a 1/8th mile deal would be pretty safe. Hopefully people would be smart enough to wear helmets & belts where appropriate, and not leave trash behind or get into fights or anything else that would create problems.

Spent my share of time in the pokey and giving the city my money.
Funny thing is we raced about a mile from Dom's signature picture was taken and usually on Test & Tune nights It was fun til the Imports started showing up in the mid eighties. After that i just went to the track when i could and still doin that today!

I think there might have been a misunderstanding?
It's a street near an AFB.
Run ways are controlled by the FAA and will not consider any kind of use except for airplanes.
That's why we are on the street !
Give us back Fontana!!!!

We have a closed air base in northern Mich that a few
people TRIED to get a drag strip set up on and it was
turned down a few times... area people said it would
be too loud(even if they had muffs) but yet they
rebuild air craft engines there at Kalleta Air and
run the engines for break in all day long... so the
kids street race and crash on a regular basis.. plus
the economy is down and for some reason they wont
open it to help the economy ....IDIOTS

No kiddin', Mr.P...
About 10 years ago, when I last lived in The People's Republic of California, there were some street-racing deaths around Tracy. A friend & I located an old unused airstrip, got people on the hook for a 'tree, storage, food truck, fencing, insurance, etc, to run a low-fee deal that would give folks a place to run at no cost to the city/county. Presented our plan to the powers that be and got shot down.
Too many people in charge have that academic "cars are evil" philosophy nowadays.

I still enjoyed watching street racing long after I no longer participated in it.

When they closed Chanute the locals tried to get a track on the property since they resurfaced the airstrip right before the closing. Unfortunately, the people who bought the on site golf course won.out.

In Florida, you lose your car, and any nearby spectators are arrested and their cars are impounded.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

If it's the one I remember, It was a good well organized plan. too bad it never materialized. Heck , there were talks of a huge motorplex with much financial backing that was being planned between Hollister and I-5 that was shot down as well.

I was there, and it was a pretty decent night. People just enjoying their cars and everyone getting along. We usually keep the group kinda small, and we want to keep the ricers and unruly kids from finding out about this place, because they will ruin it for sure!!

So what Thumperdart REALLY means to say, is that there was a few street races SOMEWHERE IN THE DESERT!!...right, Dom??

Thankxxx 4 understanding man and the tree huggers need a life for sure. Street racing`s been around since the horse and buggy and it`s gettin more common and popular every day because of the lack of tracks. Anyhow, good 2 see u run Al................

I'm not a proponent of racing in an area that can involve "innocent" traffic, or where spectators put themselves in dangerous situations......but as long as tracks close, there will be an uptick in street activities.

We have towed 3+ hours to get to ATCO and 5+ hours in traffic to get home, paying laughable tolls, over miserable roads and to chase a number, I have no problem with it, but if something comes up on the street......

Kelleta was trying to get the ok to build a track in mid michigan(Bentley) too out in the farmland, but the neighboring people said no. they thought the cows wouldn't milk right with the noise.

If I was too concerned about the "officials" checking these posts, I`d have WAY more to worry about than this.......... Regardless a few of us on here have been beating up the streets since WAY back in the late 80`s and it`s only going to get bigger unless they heavily crack down on us and hopefully no incidents happen to create that.........

What a shame that all of these closed AFB's cannot be used for regular, organized race activities. Be it drag racing, auto-x, skid pads, drifters, etc...

Around here PIR used to do Friday and Saturday night races till 1 am. The local law said if you want to race at night then go to the track. So racers went to the track. Then people bought houses next to the track and complained about the noise. Now the track closes at 10 (may be 10:30); guess where the racers went back to?

with ya Jim. Even Lebanon Valley (outside Albany, N.Y.) is a bit of a ride for you. Yeah things are getting "heated" in the tri -state area and all over the country as dragstrips are drying up. Just remember what happens in the streets STAYS THERE (in the streets)!

Yeah not sure why Conn & Mass have their heads up their butt!? I was involved in 1(Gardner) out of the 4 attempts(Orange,Gardner,Winchendon,& Uxbridge) I know of to build a track in Mass. It seems noise is the biggest issue to most.

Keep it on the track. I witnessed a wrecker pulling a duster back upright that had been upside down on it top burning in a ditch.. the driver and his 3 passengers were burned up like toast. white nuckle bones could be seen sticking out of the charred flesh of one of the hands. A eye witness ( that I knew ) said they was racing and lost controll. the eye witness tried to help but could do nothing. He said he could hear the passengers screaming as the fire killed them but, the way the car landed upside down in the ditch they could not get out and he could not help they...

Ct. & Mass (along with most of America) are run by jag-offs.

Many areas are loud.....like airports. I'd rather have a track in Ct. that required mufflers, than sit in traffic for HOURS trying to get home from ATCO.

Wow, In NC you can race just about anything within a 1 hour radius for a small fee except horses.

He had a 10.60 n/a smallblock Nova(imagine that)that he claimed was the shiznitt but after he backed it off the trailer sounding crappy and loading up, he wussed out claiming that the other car he was going to race took to long or something like that. This is a horrible way to end lifes for sure but he shouldn`t of taken people along w/him........not very smart. However, I would think more people have died at tracks racing than on the street but maybe I`m wrong here and as soon as I put slicks on my pig I plan on making a pass or two for some coin and a bit of fun............

Yeah I was there for all of that. I was the young guy with a hat and Mopar shirt. That didnt happen to be you standing by the 55 with a rat motor and 4spd after he made a pass, was it?

Seems to be the new spot up there... Might have to go check it out, good to hear theres somewhere people are actually racing and not just standing around waiting for the fuzz to come...

I guess my take on street racing is long as you do it far from any people and aren't endangering anyone but yourselves, and at your own risk, have at it.

Thats how we've always done it. I may be a young gun compared to these old farts but ive been around it my whole life and was always told "theres a time and place for everything"

The only people that could possibly get hurt are the people that are there by choice and know the risks. With that being said, theres never anyone standing in front of the cars.

Not sure if I`ll be there Sat. or not but either way be safe. I don`t really care for that spot myself and would rather find an area farther out in the desert but that`s not my call. Old fart? I`m 52 years young and in way better shape than most guys your age but that`s cool.........
