what is the 5 speed used behind a 88 pre-mag v-6 in a d-100 truck?

what else can you find this 5 speed in that will swap to the d-100 truck.

thats the a535/np2500. the v6 block is based of the 318 block, so i'm guessing it's a direct fit. the np2500 is a bit of a lightweight trans. the np3500 would be the better score.

The NV 2500 and the NV 3500 are light duty trannys and are not really suited to being behind a torquey engine. If your thinking what Im thinking you are you want the NV4500. Those came behind the 360s.. IIRC you will definately have floor pan clearance problems if you dont have the stick floorpan.

After FIVE NV4500's behind my 99 Cummins 3500 I can say that they are not heavy duty too...

I wouldnt expect a 4500 to last behind the torqe of a Cummins either, a V8 gas motor yes..

My daughter has the AX15 behind a 4.0L in a 2001 Cherokee. Good transmission for that application I believe. It has 130k miles. Some Redline MT90 lube helped shifting and reduced the rattle at idle. Would I want it behind a healthy V8 SB? No.

I've never driven an NV4500, but aren't they "truck gearboxes" big, clunky, difficult to shift quickly?

the NV3500 I had in my Dakota worked great. behind a stock 360 I would never worry about it. they're rated for 350 ft lbs if you get the close ratio version (a 3.48 first gear ratio vs the 4.01 first gear ratio in the "wide" spread version) the stock magnum 360s make 345 ft lbs, and unless you put on sticky slicks and try to launch it off the line at 5,000 rpm, you will not break it.

My 360 is making 285 RWHP and 325 RWTQ, so I figure that it's about 375-400 ft lbs at the crank, and 350-360 hp at the crank. I'm fairly confident that even with that power level, as long as I didn't use sticky tires or abuse the gearbox with power shifts that it would last a long time behind that combo.

but, that said, I upgraded to a T56 anyway, because I know that someday, I'm going to want to put some good heads and maybe a stroker crank into my 360, and that my power levels will increase dramatically.

the 2500 is a bit of a light weight, but as long as you aren't racing or towing, it should be more than adequate. a 4 door dakota with a load in the bed at the rated maximum has a 5 speed designed for it. i'd rather have the 3500, but if i already had a 2500 i'd make it work. whats a 2 door d series pickup weigh versus a 4 door dakota? i'm betting it's really, really close. as long as scratch resists the urge to go to the drags, or muddin' with it, it should be just fine. (as if you could keep mike out of the mud in the first place? please. )

My 4.7 auto, 2wd quad cab Dakota weighs 4500 empty. A 4wd will be a couple hundred pounds heavier. But I've never seen a quad cab with a stick... Although I've heard some do exist

Had a chance to drive a five speed Chevy one ton today I think the transmission is a Getrag. It's synchronized in all five gears easy slick shifting what a difference from my NP 420!

Scratch, a supra 5 speed transmission. Will bolt to the sale bellhousing as a ax15, look into it. If you search www.turbododge.com for a rear wheel drive shadow with a 2.4 turbo and that tranny, the guys have lots of info on it.

well I know the differance between the v-6 DAK bell and the D100 bell now.

a535 can be found in 87-91 4cyl/v-6 DAK/v-6 d-100 trucks.

d-100 has slave on passide and both bolt patterns for a535 5 speed and the granny tranny 4-speed which has slave on pass side in 2x and 4x4

Dak bell has a535 bolt pattern only, slave on driver side.

a535 5 speed takes a 904 slip yoke.

a535 5 speed take a long style speedo pinion and housing, clamp, bolt

a535 5 speed has 1 style trans mount/xmember for DAK and "seems" to use the same spool mount/xmember as the auto 727/904 d-100/d-150 trucks.

looks to me the hydro/clutch system and v-6/v-8 bellhousing/a535 5 speed was a direct bolt-in replacment for the 833OD 4-speed in the D100/D-150 trucks starting in 88-91 trucks.

after looking at it for a while today with it in hand, I think it will fit in the 88 truck small auto trans tunnel. (Basketcase siad his 88 v-6 5 speed was the same as the 87 small hump floorpan)

now for the hens teeth gold nugget part...

you can get a remaned a535 or a used a 535 from a JY and none come with stub shift lever/housing.. trans runs 750-1200 $$$ if you find one.. then there is the shifter thats will be MIA.

so any core a535 or the shifter housing stub lever is GOLD!! and as rare as hens teeth it seems.

I need this one piece to finish the conversion..can anyone find one in their area for me would be great..its gold so I expect to pay GOLD prices for it.

and if it dont work out i can always use a granny tranny with the v-6/v-8 bell housing.

BASKETCASE..did you keep the shifter housing from the a535?????
you should be kicking yourself about now for scrapping the a535 and shifter housing.. it is gold even making noise or broken...and you just tossed it out..

can you go get it back?? hurry up plez.

some pics for everone to
