I put on a new gasket with Permatex High Tack gasket sealer, on all four sides. Followed directions to the letter. Drove the car a short way today. Pan is leaking. I checked the blots which were loose by about a 1/4 turn to re-tighten them. Should I use the Red or Blue Permatex threadlocker on the bolts?

This is getting old.

Sorry I didnt get in on part 1 of the pan leak saga.
I had pan sealing troubles and went this route. No more leaks.
Go to the dealer and get a reusable gasket for a Ram pickup they used the same gasket as a 727. P/N 2464324AC retail of around $15.60 Gaskets are a hard plastic with silicone bead on both sides to seal. No sealer is needed on the gasket. The hard plastic prevents over tightening the pan bolts and possibly causing the gasket to squish.

That will be the next gasket I'll use if this one leaks again after I find a way to keep the bolts tight. I got a fel-pro gasket, a new one again, and put the high tack gasket sealer on all four surfaces. Let it dry to a tacky touch. Installed pan. Didn't put any fluid in for over 24 hours. Ran the car a few miles, got home, no leakes, and checked the bolts. They were ever so slightly loose. Tightened them again. Drove a few miles today, got home and pan was leaking. Bolts were loose again. Tightened them again! Drove a few miles again, got home no leaks. Checked bolts, they were loose again!! About maybe an 1/8 of a turn to tighten them except two that took about a 1/4 turn to tighten them. Don't know why the bolts keep coming loose so I want to try the Blue Threadlocker. Hopefully that will keep the bolts tight and the pan from leaking.

Are you positive its the pan leaking?
I only ask because I thought my cast pan wasn't sealing only to find out it was my dipstick tube o ring. I needed to install a new o ring with some rtv smeared on it to stop the leak.
Shift seals are also another potential leak source that makes it look like its a pan leak.

I asked him that on his other post and he said it was the pan for sure.

I also had a TCI pan that I finally got to seal. I soon found out I had a bad casting and it was leaking THROUGH the pan. 1 little pinhole.

I returned that pan, got another, used the gasket mentioned and used lock-washers on the bolts. That seemed to do it.

I looked carefully around the trans to see if the fluid could be coming down from there, just to make sure. I looked for a defect in the pan too. Nope, it's coming out of between the pan and the trans through the gasket area. Above the pan it's dry.

I've come to the conclusion that it's because the pan bolts keep coming loose. Since no one answered, I guess it's the Blue Threadlocker I'll try. Red seems a little much.

If the Blue Threadlocker doesn't work keeping the pan bolts tight, I'll be trying that gasket for sure.

How loose are the bolts in the treads of the trans case ?.... OTHER THAN getting some of those nylon inserted bolts(they have been used on some of the B/RB and Hemi engine oil pans) .... I would try a simple lite lock washer....

Sorry, Doc, I don't understand what you are trying to tell me.

The bolts for the pan have lock washers.

The trans is fine.

No plastic anywhere.

If all fails this stuff will work. Makes getting the pan back off tough though. You can try Permatex The Right Stuff Gasket Maker

Easier and probably cheaper to just use blue locktite!

Doc, never seen those before.

Would those work better than the bolts that came with the pan and Permatex Blue Threadlock, Locktite, Locktight? That one.

That pic is what I pulled up on a Bing search ... the OEM Mopar ones were a yellow or white nylon insert. And I would not bet my life on it ... but I think the OEM used those on the windage tray motors only .... because of the two gaskets and the thickness of the tray....

I say either get those special bolts OR use some quality RTV on the bolts going into the case. ANY of that locklite ....I would worry about it fugging-up the alum threads on the case ...if you ever had to pull the pan off again.

Come on??? Do pan bolts really come loose or does the gasket shrink and the bolts need tightening? I would tighten and paint mark them and drive it. My bets are junk gaskets or a leak from somewhere else.

Thats what I was wondering. As the gasket compresses, then seats, it will cause the bolts to loosen up.

They do the same thing on valve cover gaskets, and hose clamps.

If I knew the answer I'd not ask the question.

I know for a fact that when changing trans fluid using the stock steel pan this doesn't happen. But with this aluminum pan the bolts need re-torquing every time I get home from taking the car out and about.

There's nothing leaking from the transmission, only from the gasket area when the bolts loosen up. I'm not making this stuff up. I'm frustrated and sick of messing with it. I'm about ready to go back to a steel pan.

BTW, it's a Fel-pro gasket.

Is this factory gasket going to work on a non factory aluminum pan?

I picked up the Mopar gasket #2464324AC. I'm impressed and in hopes this works. I'll let ya all know in a few days.

BTW, it cost me $26,75, but well worth it if it works!

remember....longer bolts and do not over torque them.

that gasket will not compress. just that o-ring bead compresses.

That gasket is the cats ass, wont smash from over tightening. Use some new bolts and lock washers.
When I posted that price that was from a few years ago. Figured it had to go up in price some.

On my Duster...I have a M.P. STEEL deep pan
with the factory rigid gasket that the dealers sell. No more leaks from the pan... Shift shaft seal, that's next on the to do list!
